Guh! I came away from this vid with three main thoughts: AtS is a stunningly beautiful show; Angel the vampire is a complete and utter badass; Luminosity is a freak’n maestro when it comes to weaving music, lyrics, visuals and artistic effect together. I don’t know AtS well enough to completely follow the story here (lots of season 4), but the narrative structure does keep me in the game and I love the depiction of an intense, dark hero. The ending is a killer- even without much AtS background. I was never hugely into Angel on Buffy, but if he’d been presented more like this, I would have been. Damn, this is just a really powerful and attractive portrayal of the character that also shows off the cinematography of the show to very nice effect.
Visceral effect: The beginning of this vid sends chills up my spine- that very first shot of W&H fading in as the music swells, then the shot upward as Angel stalks toward the camera followed by the neon lights- DAMN! I’m immediately smitten. Stylistic, ominous, dark and threatening- guh! I love a vid that hooks you right off the bat. The whole slow buildup is probably my favorite part of the vid- right through ‘putting out fire with gasoline’- with the cigarette and the flames spreading out- it’s one of the most effective things I’ve ever seen. It sets a mood, drips style, and lays out the premise of the story being told- all while making me LOVE this badass Angel! Of course, I also know at this point that I’m going to be missing a lot of the narrative because a lot’s going on that I lack the context to understand. However, I can FEEL the story that’s being presented. I get that this is about Connor and his loss and Angel fighting back using any means necessary. Hee- and just a note on how much I love the Lila shots- particularly that one of her watching on the monitor while smiling. And the end- the slash with the knife and fade to white just fits the song so perfectly- pulled it all together for me. Angel ends up ‘fighting fire with gasoline’- sacrificing his son to save his son. Damn- makes me wish I’d been watching the show then so I’d really ‘get’ everything.
I don’t know how Luminosity does this- she picks these songs that fit not only the show but the specific character- and then she makes the clips and the song mesh together in this big stylistic production that just ineveitably kicks me in the gut- even when I don’t have much context within which to understand the vid. Envy. I am green with envy.
Anyway, a couple of points I particularly loved- like I said, the whole slow buildup. The quick, alternating views of W&H- I so dug that; the moon shot and how it was a reflection (that worked so much better for me than an actual shot of the moon); Angel with the sword and fading from the downward stroke to him dropping it and moving down the passage. I adore that opening. Also- the elevator scenes worked particularly well for me- and when the ring hit the floor on the beat, it was excellent. (Ditto an earlier scene with the timing on the punching bag hitting the wall and the floor). Also, during the song bridge- the frantic sex that it starts off kicked ass, as did the segue from smashing the hand to smashing the door. Lastly- I love how strongly Angel’s pain comes through when he’s ushered into W&H and shown Connor and you really feel it in you’re gut how he’s kind of selling his soul for his son- and then the end. Argh!! So freaking good!
