13th Colony - Battlestar Galactica [Linked by: Rob1 screen 03/17/05]An active discussion community for the new BSG, the site was created as a spoiler free space for the poor Americans who had to wait to get the episodes! It’s on my friends list as a great place for after-eppy chats about the series, as well as being a good way to keep up with the latest news.
One of my favorite archives due to its design and the lovely collection of Spike-centric reads. It’s maintained by hand and the quality is a notch or two above most open archive sites. It’s also very easy to sort through the different offerings and find something you want to read, be it gen, het or slash. If you’re looking for Spike, this is a great place to find him.
This is how a fanfic archive should look! Like another design fav ‘All About Spike’, this site is handed coded, pretty to look at, and it makes it very easy to sort through the fiction. Though it started as a home for the Yahoo group Battlestar Galactica Writers Squadron’s fiction, it does take submissions. A nice place to browse for fic- I personally go straight to the Adama listings!
Another site I’m rec’ing for its excellent recs! As an added bonus, Ptyx presents you with both an English and a Portuguese version of the site! These Snape focused recs are extensive yet high quality. You’ll find a veritable ‘who’s who’ of talented writers. Slash centric with an emphasis on Snape/Harry, I devoured just about every rec’ed story. You’ll also find the authors collection of their own work, which is well worth reading.
“The bonibaru perfect collect” offers a variety of stories by skilled author Bonibaru, as well as videos and fan fiction recommendations. Expect an extensive collection of recs- I skim it often when I’m looking for something new to read.
This is the place to go if you’re looking for Buffy fan vids. It’s a searchable database of most of the Buffy videos on the net. A very handy site, whether you’re looking for vids or want to spread the word about your own.
Smallville recs by LCJ. This site has a higher ratio of Het and Gen than most, but all of it’s quite nice.
Crack Van is, well, crack! You’ll find fan fiction recs for a wide variety of fandoms, all supplied by volunteers who take turns ‘driving the van’ each month, with special days devoted to vids and x-over fics. In addition to the recs, there are some excellent show/fandom synopsis to help to get you up to speed on both canon and the fandom that surrounds it. It’s a great place to skim for the shows you love or the shows you could love!
The site’s a collaboration between Dove, Linaelyn, Melusina and Stowaway, and home to one of the better collection of Pirates of the Carib. fanfic that I’ve found. In a fandom that hasn’t particularly impressed me with the writing, I’ve found this site to be one I can count on for good, readable fic at the least, and some real jewels at the best. The essay section is also worth a look. Note- though Pirate fic is the focus, you’ll find a smattering of other fandoms as well.
The site focuses on romantic het recs, mostly Snape and Hermione. The stories reviewed aren’t really to my taste, but I love the organization and the detail of the recommendations.
An automated index for Snape/Hermione fanfic, you’ll find a 1,000+ story links. Granted, many of the stories are bad, but many are not. I suggest you send me direct links for those that are not! Easy to sort and search, it’s a worthwhile site to visit for the S/H fans. That said, there’s no search criteria for ‘good fic’, so expect to spend some time digging for it.
OK- this archive disappeared in a puff of wankery- I won’t even try to tease out who was the biggest wanker. Mostly I’ll just sit here and be irritated by how much a pain in the ass HP fandom is. The link- sans link- remains for those wondering what happened.
This is a nice Snape/Harry focused site- it took over for the invaluable ‘Walking the Plank’. You’ll find a large selection of Harry/Snape fan fiction as well as some fan art, recommendations and the official fanlisting for the pairing. A handy site, with clean navigation and sortable stories- hope it keeps growing!
eFiction is free, open source software for creating and maintaining fiction archives. It’s based on an earlier script by Rivka and requires php and mysql support. I’d say this is one of the most popular available packages out there if you’re looking to start your own fanfic archive- either for hosting your own work or the work of others. It’s also handy for maintaining a recommendation site- though it’s not what’s used here. Of the freely available scripts- eFiction is the one I’d choose.
Yes, cleaning out my ever changing links to Harry Potter fanfic has reminded me of the need to a link to that red-headed bastard step-child of fandom- Fandom Wank. This is a community journal with a long and checkered history. It purports to do nothing useful at all and exists mainly to point and laugh at the stupid and pretentious in fandom. Needless to say, Harry Potter crops up a lot. Be warned, though. For some, F_W is a blight on fandom and an affront to all that is holy. As I say- a very checkered history.
The Favorites Tracker is a neat site I wrote that allows you to keep track of your favorite Harry Potter fan fiction stories on multiple fan fiction sites. It lets you quickly find out when new chapters have been added so you can jump right into reading them.

A huge site that should be a gold mine of great fic for me, this 6,000+ author archive is restricted to stories that are NOT adult rated and that meet some basic grammar guidelines. Unfortunately, the navigation was designed by crack addled monkeys, so it’s hard to find anything worthwhile. I honestly have better luck at FFN, which is kind of scary. I do sometimes dig around in the ‘niffler’ forums- the recommendation section of the site. There is good stuff to be found that way, but since only the titles of the stories are shown (no summary, no characters) I usually have to click through 20-30 links before I find one that’s even close to being in my area of interest. Eh- other people should go dig around and then send me links to all the good Snape fic.
The obligatory LJ for BSG fan videos, you’ll find vids and vid discussion. It’s a pretty show, I hope this stays an active site!
Harry Potter fandom spread through the www like a viral infection. Thus it falls to sites like ‘Harry Potter Essays’ to draw form from the chaos. This invaluable LJ makes a valiant attempt to gather together HP essays and categorize them in a coherent way. Expect to find essays on everything- from pairings to characters to book reviews and speculation. You name it, someone in the fandom has written about it, and there’s a fair chance of tracking it down here. Lots of links, including non-LJ, but the LJ stuff does predominate.
I was fortunate enough to find Isis’ site early in my Harry Potter wanderings. Our tastes in fic overlap quite a bit and she has an excellent eye for good writing. I’ll read things she rec’s that I’d never try otherwise- and I’m usually glad I did. In addition to the excellent and well organized recs, you’ll also find her own stories. Expect tight writing and very clever, well crafted tales. To top it off, the essay section is both interesting and thought provoking. Definitely one for the bookmarks.
I am a big fan of gen fic- particularly when it comes to Harry Potter. It really doesn’t help that Snape’s my favorite and he’s not a character I can easily picture being in a relationship with anybody. Snape and Harry? Snape and Hermione? Snape and Sirius? O_o Dude- are we reading the same books? Now yes, I’m adaptable and I have truly loved stories pairing Snape with just about anyone. But I’ll sacrifice a virgin if it will get me a good gen fic. Jetamors’ page of gen fic recs has saved more than a few virgins. Though not a flashy site, it’s well organized and easy to find what you want- if what you want is solid HP gen.
I’m not particularly a fan of Chloe/Lex as a pairing- my heart pretty much belongs to Clark/Lex. That doesn’t stop me from marveling at Becky’s wonderful videos. This site is highly recommended for those who enjoy polished, innovative vids AND for those who see the spark between the spunky blond and the bald billionaire. There’s also a small collection of fan fiction and essays, but it’s the vids that keep this site on my ‘must visit’ list.
The first time I really appreciated a vid as ‘art’ was watching one of Luminosity’s vids. Her work simply blows me away. Fortunately, she’s almost as prolific as she is talented, as you’ll see in this large collection of her Buffyverse, Highlander and Smallville work. Her vids range from the subtle and deeply emotional to the cracktastically funny. All of it’s innovative and fresh and sophisticated when it comes to technique. If you want to get the appeal of vids, this is the place to do it.
I don’t think Luthien has recommended a Harry Potter story I didn’t like! Most of her recs are plot heavy and Snape intensive- just the way I like them. Though slash predominates, you’ll find a variety of Potter fanfic rec’ed, as well as stories from a variety of other fandoms. Luthien’s own work is well worth checking out too- ‘Teeth’ is a personal favorite! For those curious about the writing process, she also has a nice and growing collection of interviews with some of the well known HP writers. Not a huge site, but a very high quality one.
An excellent all around resource for SV fen, you’ll find a resource page full of links to archives, recommendation sites, forums, art, LJs of interest. You name it, if it’s Smallville related, you’ll find a link to it. You’ll also find svmadelyn’s own stories and recs, and while the focus is on SV, other fandoms get their fair share of attention. A site worth wandering around, just to see what new things you’ll find.
A multi-fandom LJ newsletter that strives to keep you up to date with all of the interesting meta discussions flying around out there. If you like talking about ‘Fandom’ and DON’T follow every single fandom, then Metafandom is for you. Note- there is a strong LJ focus, but its not entirely limited to that.
Hee! I love painless_j’s Harry Potter thematic fic lists. It’s a nifty idea and a real community service in a fandom that tends to sprawl all over the place. On her site you’ll find lists with brief summaries of a variety of ‘types’ of HP fic. Slash is probably over-represented, but that’s no problem for me. Man- HP is an ODD fandom! There’s a little bit of everything- from Shakespearean HP to double penetration. It’s all organized in her memories in very readable fashion. As an added bonus, she also provides a nice set of recs (and on the lists, recommended reads are marked as such), some handy links, and general musings on Harry Potter fandom, writing, and writing clichés (and she’s in a good position to know about those!). Yep- this is another one of those sites where it’s easy to get lost for hours. Enjoy!
here’s luck is a master of technique. Her vids tend to be shiny, shiny things with a lot of heart at the core. While I don’t share her obvious Faith love, I do love her videos. Oddly, I think the quirky ‘Window of Opportunity’ is my favorite, and I’ve never even SEEN Wonderfalls. Fast, fun, and full of strong women, I studied these vids a lot when I was trying to figure out what makes a video work- she has a great sense of movement and her vids just flow. As an added bonus, there is a great selection of video recommendations that will help you track down some of the best vidders in fandom. Finally, don’t forget to skim the essays for meta and character discussion. Useful and pretty, fans of Faith and fans of vidding will find it well worth a visit.
An automated archive for Pirates of the Carribean fic, you’ll find hundreds of stories featuring just about any pairing you can think of. The quality varies. A lot. But there is good fic to be found, and a nice selection of fan art as well. (And it took me forever to hunt this bloody link down! ARGH! (That’s pirate speak for ‘ARGH!’))
SciFi.com’s official BSG site offers up some great pictures, interviews, behind the scenes scoops, episode summaries, character and actor info, an active forum, and a GREAT blog where series creator Ron Moore addresses fan questions and chats about the show. It’s all good, and it’s wrapped up in a very pretty package- but it’s the blog that keeps me coming back! Moore’s approach to the show and the fans is a refreshing change after Smallville.
Formerly known as ‘Head tilt headquarters’ (don’t ask) this new site is home to the videos of sisabet and dr. dawn- which include some of my personal favorites. As an added bonus, there’s a selection of Luminosity’s vids as well! Rapture is achieved. The focus is on the Buffyverse with a smattering of Smallville, but fan of the shows or not, the vids are ‘must see’ viewing. Fans of vidding should also check out the ‘links’- er, when they go back up. Also expect some ‘Invisible Man’ chatter.
You’ll find just about any pairing or character represented in this large, automated index of Smallville music vids. Easy to search, easy to submit a link, definitely recommended as a place to browse for SV vids.
A collection of ‘latest news’ articles, essays and episode reviews, the site also offers up a ‘virtual season’ that’s better than the show. Which yea, faint praise, but still worth a look. It earned its place in my bookmarks for the excellent set of Smallville essays and the episode reviews. Expect to find some deep thoughts about a shallow show. Smallville is definitely a series where the fandom is more interesting than the canon.
The link on this one goes straight to the Smallville episode reviews, because that’s the reason this site is in my bookmarks! The site itself is devoted to the many incarnations of Superman, and it’s a great read for the comics fans. However, I read it for the interesting and different take on the series. It’s fun to read a Superman fanboy’s reactions to the show. The different perspective results in some real insights and I’ll admit I get a kick out of the Lana hatred. It’s nice to know that even the comic fen have problems with how she’s taken over the story. The site is highly entertaining, even if I don’t share the comic love.
A conglomerate of Harry Potter archives, the site offers a variety of HP fanfic. By far the best known and most active is ‘Ashwinder’, home to 1,000+ Snape/Hermione stories. There are also sections devoted to Slash, Lupin, Snape, the Weasleys and others, though the site will be most useful to the Snape and Snape/Hermione fans. It is a vetted site, thus the quality is a bit above the norm. Hunt around and you’ll even find a fan art archive and a not particularly active forum.
TWoP has an extensive set of forums on a wide variety of shows. Known for its snark, its a good place to go for episode summaries and chat. Personally, I find some forums lots of fun and others down right irritating. Still, it’s definitely a good place to check out, and some forums can prove very useful, what with threads for show spoilers, fan fiction and fan art recommendations, and latest show news. With this one, it’s a case of YMMV- and it may vary depending on which shows you watch and whether your love is pure or a bitter, bitter thing!
An aptly titled recommendation site for fans of the Snape/Harry pairing, this LJ is run by absynthia, aubrem and gaycrow. In their words: The Snarry_Reader is a master list of those stories we have most enjoyed, along with short summaries and/or reviews. I’d definitely recommend this as ‘first stop shopping’ for those interested in the pairing.
Someone recently sent in a suggestion to check out Minisinoo’s fanfic. I haven’t yet, mostly because X-Men isn’t really my thing. But the name looked familiar and a quick browse through my bookmarks reminded me why. There are some fabulous essays on this site- great stuff on both fandom and writing. Of course, there’s also plenty of fanfic as well as some recommended reading. Whether the X-Men is your thing or not, the site is still worth checking out.
A mid-sized archive that focuses on the two Potter boys, Harry and James. No, it’s not an incest site, you perv! Well, ok, there is some incest, but I go to skim for the Harry/Snape reads, which is slightly less pervy than incest. Unless one of them happens to be dead, in which case the perv factor is pretty much a draw. It is a vetted archive, so the writing tends to be a cut above. Snape isn’t really a focus, but what’s there is well worth a look.
So back in 2002, there was the first Harry Potter Fuh-Q Fest. Happily, it was a Snape-slash fest! Life was good. I’m not normally a big fan of fic challenges, but I consumed just about every story in the archive when I first got into Harry Potter fandom. There’s a real mix, some jewels and some not. And then the archive went away. And there was sadness. And then the archive came back. And there was much rejoicing. Go rejoice with some Snape porn.
Fun, interesting and eclectic, this LJ community gives shippers from fandoms big and small the chance to explain why it is their pairing is the OTP! That’s ‘One True Pairing’- just in case you were wondering. From fandom giants such as Clark/Lex and Duncan/Methos to couples you might not have considered (Neville/Draco?), there’s a good chance you’ll find it here. Heck, there’s a good chance you’ll find fandoms you’ve never heard of! If you’re on the hunt for something new, check it out. Write-ups generally include a nice list of links for those interested in finding out more about the OTP.
THE site for Smallville slash, you will find literally thousands of stories by a multitude of authors. Most of the focus is on Clark/Lex (no surprise), but any Smallville slash story is welcome on this automated archive.
Kai writes wonderful fic in a variety of fandoms (including Witchblade and Brimstone- not easy to find!). I’ve rec’ed more than a few of them, including ‘A Necessary Evil’ and ‘Contemporary Magical Innovations’. However, what makes the site a ‘must see’ for the Harry Potter fans are the fanfic recommendations. The recs are extensive, well organized and descriptive without spoiling the story. It doesn’t hurt that Kai has great taste. I’ve yet to be disappointed by one of the stories I’ve found through this rec page, though I’ll admit I haven’t read them all. Snape lover that I am, my focus is a bit more narrow than Kai’s. Of course, that’s good news for those with more eclectic tastes, and you’ll find a wide range of good stories.
Multi-fandom fun can be found on this collective site. The navigation is a little vague, but it’s a lovely place to wander around looking for essays, recs and fanfic. Some truly good authors can be found here.
A large, multi-fandom video awards site, Video Elite also has a nice link index to vid sites in a variety of fandoms. According to the FAQ: We are just people who love music videos and wanted to award those that we felt were exceptional. We had seen many award sites that were for a specific TV show or genre but we wanted a site that awarded videos of all types.
This is an old school Snape-slash archive. It was retired some time ago and the stories migrated over to the Detention archive- which then went belly up. Fortunately the old archive was saved and dedicated fen got it back up and running. It’s not as slick as Detention was, but it has the benefit of actually existing. Given the efforts put into getting it back online, I wouldn’t be surprised if it sees some upgrades and new activity in the near future.
What’s up with the Faith vidders making such shiny cool vids?! Wicked Amp’s stuff is fun to watch because you never know what to expect. There’s a lot of interesting experimentation going on- perhaps its the anime influence. Whatever the cause, the result is funky, different, fast and furious, which rather suits Faith. There isn’t as much quantity as some vidders, but what’s there is definitely worth checking out. You’ll also find some fanfic, fan fiction reviews, and anime vids.
