Very interesting and very AU, the story is based on the premise that Peter took Harry’s place just before he was taken to Hogwart’s by Hagrid. While ‘Peter in disguise’ lives the life that should have been Harry’s, Harry is left trapped in the Riddle mansion with only a diary for company. The story is an excellent AU, and MUCH changes as a result of Harry’s interactions with ‘Tom’. In fact, who the ‘heros’ are is very much open to debate. Tom/Voldemort is not redeemed, but neither is he the insane psychopath from the books. Likewise, while the Dumbledore of the books obviously tends to manipulate those around him, I doubt that he would prefer a Doppleganger for his hero. This is, clearly, a dark story and not for all tastes. Still, I found it fascinating, particularly the portrayal of Snape, who comes across as the best of them all. He is trapped between two harsh masters, yet dedicated to Harry and to giving Harry a choice in who he wants to be. I liked it and I liked the ending.
