This really isn’t my usual fare, but I generally found it well written and interesting. It’s a long Hermione focused fic that begins in the kids’ final year- with Hermione’s death! Seems a potion went wrong and the results were rather disastrous. Hermione? Is very pissed. Heck, she’d yet to pass her N.E.W.T.s! She had an entire life to live, and the whole ‘death’ thing really jams up her plans. So.... No one should be that surprised when she turns up as a Hogwarts ghost. Of course, everyone is- but they’ll just have to deal. [READ MORE]
I quite enjoyed the first half of this story. As mentioned, the writing is solid and the ideas are quite interesting. The author does a nice job of sticking to a very tight Hermione PoV, and the reader really gets to follow along as the girl discovers the world of ghosts. I particularly liked how different characters reacted to Hermione’s change of status. Ron and Harry came across as great friends, and it was nice to see the trio hold together despite the odds. I also liked the contrast between Minerva and Severus, with the very Gryffindor McGonagall unable to reconcile ‘live Hermione’ and ‘ghost Hermione’ as a single entity, while Snape is more willing to adapt to life’s ambiguities.
Anyway, I very much got sucked into the story and wondered what would happen to this rather appealing version of Hermione. I also liked the revelations we got concerning Snape- how we find he grieved for her and felt responsible for her death, yet maintained an indifferent exterior. With Snape, I like to think he can best be judged on his actions as opposed to his words, and that holds very true in this fic.
Now, the story did bog down a bit for me in the later half, Hermione was sometimes a little Mary Sue-ish (she solved a few too many problems for the Order a bit too neatly for my taste), and the ending was both sappily romantic and completely unsurprising. Much of this is simply the nature of the genre- at heart, this is a romance. Hell, the author even notes at the end If you didn’t see that coming, you need to turn in your Hopeless Romantic Guild card. So really, my complaints are mostly a matter of taste. If you’re in the mood for well written het romance, this is one of the better ones I’ve read. I stuck it through to the end, and given the extent to which my tastes do not run that way, that’s an endorsement. [HIDE]
One note- to read the whole thing, you’ll have to register (one chapter was age restricted)- but it was automatic and not a pain in the butt, so don’t let that discourage you.
