So, everybody on the flist is talking about the 2004 yuletide challenge fics, and lemming that I am, I just gotta jump off that cliff. Now I dabble in quite a few fandoms, but generally speaking, I won’t read fic unless something in the canon draws me to it. Thus a lot of the stories in the challenge don’t really stir my interest (though IM is starting to look tempting- I’ll blame sisabet for that). But as I’m browsing through, I spot Brimstone! And not just Brimstone- but a Brimstone/Dogma x-over. What a bloody brilliant idea that was!
This mid-sized read is told from Zeke’s PoV (first person), and it works well here. The beginning was very reminiscent of the show, giving the reader more background than is usual in fanfic. I thought it worked- it reminded me a bit of Brimstone’s opening credits. It also serves as a nice primer for Dogma fans who may be wondering why this undead guy is wandering around hunting demons. The Dogma background isn’t explained in such a way (which is good- given it’s Zeke’s PoV), but I’d say it’s still understandable to someone unfamiliar with that canon. They’d miss some of the nuances, but the basic story comes through loud and clear.
What is the basic story? It’s a pretty good ‘case file’ type of gen story, that finds Zeke on the trail of a female demon. He suspects the stripper named Serendipity may be his ultimately target, but poor Zeke is going to be in for a lot of surprises in this story. Here’s hoping he gets a little Divine intervention, because he’s going to need it.
I liked the mixing of the two canons, the universes fit nicely and the story raises some rather interesting questions about the nature of God, man, and sin. I totally dug Satan and Metatron getting into a pissing contest, and can easily imagine Zeke sitting there rolling his eyes and trying to stage an intervention. Angels are apparently pissy little creatures! The whole thing is just well written and flows very nicely and this is a universe I’d loved to see explored even more. Though there weren’t any tremendous surprises plot wise, there was a solid framework for the story, a good dose of action, and some nifty character interactions and banter to flesh it all out.
A good read for the Brimstone fans, and a nice introduction to both canons for those unfamiliar with them. I’d have liked a bit more Satan, but hey, I’d pretty much always like a bit more Satan!

I have to say, this is one of the best brimstone stories I’ve read. It really brought the show back to me which is saying alot since I haven’t seen it since it aired on fox. I even went on a spree to see if i could find old transcripts or scripts..sadly all there is is the pilot. But a fun read for any brimstone fan and should make sense even if one isn’t familiar with dogma Posted by jebbypal on 01/15 at 05:04 PM

Someone just pointed rec out to me, and I just wanted to say thank you! And to give you my name, since they were posted anonymously at the time. (I would have liked to have had more Satan as well--there just wasn’t space for him. He’s a mouthy one, that’s for sure!) -tigerlady/docmichelle Posted by docmichelle on 02/05 at 08:33 PM
