Set during s2, I liked the Lex voice in this mid-sized read. I thought it did a nice job of highlighting the bitterness Lex must feel when constantly confronted with Clark’s lies and lack of trust. It’s a very tight POV, and it works here, even if I was left slightly confused concerning some of the actual events in the story.
And what are the events in the story? Well, it begins with Clark coming into the mansion in his usual way, but Lex is a little too weary to want to deal with him. And then… well, this was the part that was a little confusing to me (and I thought some of the logic was a bit vague), but Lex gets shot and passes out. When he comes to, Clark and Martha are there and Clark takes him up to his bedroom to recover (I’ll assume it was a minor flesh wound!). From there, things get a bit heated- until Lex gets zapped with a dart and passes out again, this time to awake in a sealed box with no way out. Luckily, good ole Clark shows up to free him, but at that point, Lex is sick of the lies and tells Clark to get the hell out of his life. Things don’t improve once Lex gets back to the castle, where Lionel shows him a tape of the kidnapping. It’s just one more insult in a highly insulting day- particularly the fact that Clark was clearly unwilling to do anything ‘unusual’ to save Lex due to the hidden camera that was taping the events. Fortunately, Clark shows up- floating outside Lex’s window and intent on making amends. Finally, he has decided to reveal his secrets rather than lose Lex for good. In the end? The live happily ever after!
Now, I did like the story, even if I had some quibbles with the whole way the ‘getting shot’ bit played out. I simply think Lex has to be insulted on some level by Clark’s really blatant lies. It also has to hurt that Lex is not deemed worthy of trust. So the internal bits worked well for me. All in all, a satisfying read and a good example of s2 fic.
