Smallville Gen [Added: 11/15/04 | Lex Clark ] Rec it? Yes

This interesting future fic begins with Lex getting a wedding invitation.  Despite his rather scattered memory, he still recalls Clark and Lana with somewhat fond regard, and decides to attend.  Over the course of his journey back to Smallville, it becomes very clear that Lex’s memories are shot to hell- and what he thinks are truths may not be.  Lex believes his scattered memories are the result of his own mental instability and his problems with alcohol.  The reader knows enough to suspect more sinister mechanisms are at work.

The thing I like most about the story is the way it plays out.  The author does a nice job of showing rather than telling, and it takes a while for the reader (and for Lex) to figure out what’s going on.  It’s slowly revealed that Lex’s memories were purposefully damaged by Lionel.  It’s only now, months after Lionel’s death, that the drugs have worn off enough for Lex’s mind to begin to repair itself.  Like I say, I enjoyed the way Lex puts the pieces together, the little hints that things aren’t as he believes them to be.  Lex does come across as a bit of a victim, but because the story is set during the period where he starts to figure everything out, he doesn’t come off as weak.  I also liked Clark, and how he feels guilty for not knowing what was happening- and how he comes through for Lex once he does.  The secondary characters- including the Kents, Lana and Pete, were also nice additions.  Lastly - big spoiler- I really loved the fact Lex was completely off concerning the whole marriage thing.  That was a cute reveal and a nice ending with a very slashy vibe.  Not as hard core action as I tend to like, but a well told story that kept my interest all the same.
