This mid-sized read had an interesting premise- Illya on his own, wounded and trapped behind enemy lines with a pretty girl who he may just love. Unfortunately, a great big chunk of the action is handled through a big exposition dump at the beginning of the story. After that, Napoleon shows up, helps send Illya the girl on their way, but gets captured for his efforts. A guilt stricken Illya wakes up days later, intent on getting his partner out.
Eh. Neat idea, with remarkably little action actually occurring in the story. While well written, I pretty much guessed where it was going withing the first few minutes. I didn’t particularly buy either Illya’s angst over leaving Napoleon behind, nor his possible love for the woman. Overall, neat idea, but it seemed like the interesting details were glossed over. Needed more ‘showing’ and less ‘telling’.
