Once Upon A Time, In Egypt

Josan
Harry Potter Gen [Added: 10/14/04 | Snape Bill] Rec it? Yes

Browsing through some of Josan’s stuff, because I like the author, and thought I’d re-read this one and write it up.  Odd.  The beginning I could SWEAR I’d read before, however the last half I didn’t remember at all.  That never happens to me!  It also reminds me of another fic I read, which I can remember jack all about, but it started with one of the Weasley boys trying to recruit Snape to help out on a dig, but in that one, Snape kept slamming the door in the guys face!  Hee- I need to track that fic down as well, because I recall liking it.

Anyway, enough rambling.  This is a mid-sized read, set post-war and told mostly from Severus’ pov.  At the beginning, Snape has come upon hard times.  Seems he may have been suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after the war, and freaked out during his first class back at Hogwarts post-war.  This resulted in him being fired, locked up in St. Mungo’s, and having his wand confiscated and his magic prohibited as conditions of release.  In short, Snape’s pretty screwed.  [READ MORE]

Fortunately, Bill Weasley shows up with an interesting offer.  A dig in Egypt has unearthed an early potions master’s tomb, and Gringotts needs a modern potions master to help safely collect and catalog the find.  When it’s revealed that Snape can’t legally leave the country, Bill spirits him away and offers him a chance to rebuild his life.  Part of that rebuilding process will involve detoxing from a highly addictive (and ultimately lethal) potion Snape was forced to take as a price of his release from St. Mungo’s.  All of this, I pretty much remembered reading, but post-detox there’s a nice bit about Snape gaining a familiar (a cat) that may be more than it appears.

Like most of Josan’s stuff, I really enjoyed the writing style and while Snape is a bit nicer than canon, the characterization makes sense given the circumstances and it’s one I enjoy.  I also enjoyed the slow creation of a ‘family’ for Snape- one made up of misfits and rebels, but a family all the same.  The whole plot with the ‘familiar’ and the relationship between Snape and the early Egyptians was also nice, and I dug how Snape’s actions in that world fit with the outcome in the modern world.  The only real sour note for me in the story was the bit about McGonagall, her past with Snape, and her involvement in his misfortune.  I like to imagine those two have a good relationship, so I wasn’t thrilled with that bit.  However, it’s a small niggle and didn’t profoundly impact the story being told.  [HIDE]
