Fox Commodore - Full Article

Norrington was such an interesting character in the movie and he’s the character I seek out in fanfic.  This is a very nice Norrington ‘gen’ story, set shortly after the movie.  While innocently hanging out in a pub with Gillette (and one can catch a slashy vibe there if one wishes), Norrington comes into possession of a fox.  Not just any fox.  This is a magic fox.  Seriously.  Of course, he doesn’t know it’s a magic fox (because really, it’s not the first thought to pop into your head when you come across a fox) and decides it would make the perfect wedding gift for Elizabeth.  What follows is a rousing adventure and a wonderful characterization of the Commodore.  Expect great writing, an original plot, brilliant characterizations of not just Norrington but secondary characters such as Gillette, and a flair for ‘showing’ rather than ‘telling’.  The only quibble I had was with the ending, which seemed a bit weak.  There is a sequel that I’ll be checking out, but there were some minor hints that future books might take a turn for the ‘Mary Sue’.  It matters not, as this story stands up quite nicely all on its own.

This is a very fun read, set during Will and Elizabeth’s engagement party.  The focus character is (of course) Norrington, who accepted Elizabeth’s invitation despite the fact he still has feelings for her.  However, the Commodore is a man of honor, and he wishes to make peace with Will and make it clear to any gossips that he supports the coming union.  Fortunately for the story, and for the good Commodore, an unexpected guest shows up.  Really- what were Elizabeth and Will thinking, sending an invite to a pirate?!  Hee!

I enjoyed the characterizations of all concerned, though Norrington in particular shines.  The style of the writing is also a bit unique- very nice use of first person POV.  Norrington’s somewhat self-deprecating wit makes a fine foundation for the storytelling.  It also does an excellent job of mixing the surreal with the mundane- rather like the movie itself.  The image of Norrington forced to hide from a bunch of man-hunting women cracked me up.  And Jack and the pants....  Yes, this is a fine example of my favorite type of PotC story- witty, sharp dialogue, sympathetic/intelligent/fun characterizations and plenty of humor hiding unseen depths.  Note- I’d really classify it as ‘pre-slash’, but I suppose that really depends on one’s point of view.

One Day’s Head Start - Full Article

Remember at the end of the movie how Norrington gives Jack ‘one day’s head start’?  Well trust Jack to make poor use of the time.  Before he knows it, he’s back in custody and on the way to the gallows.  Fortunately, the sea herself intervenes, and Norrington and Jack end up stranded together on a deserted island.  Where, in a shocking turn of events, they don’t have sex.

This is a short little character study that I recommend due to the characterizations of both Jack and the Commodore.  Not much really happens, but I like the insights into each man’s personality.  It’s well written, has an easy style that fits PotC and gives us a Jack who is as cagey as he is crazy.  Good fic, even if it isn’t as ‘plotty’ an action tale as I normally prefer.
