[Added: 03/24/04 | Ian Irons | Series: Young Ian Series]
prime

Someone recommended this story to me after I made a joke about not being able to stomach the idea of Ian playing with ‘fluffy bunny toys’ as a child. Well, get ready for fluffy bunnies, chopped up brains, and an intense and angsty look into what made Ian the man he is today.  This is the first in a series that examines Ian’s childhood.  Each book in the series is wonderful, but I believe this to be the best.  In this tale, Ian wants a soul.  Irons has informed him he doesn’t have one, and if Irons says it is true, then it must be so.  What follows explores Ian’s genetic make-up, the issue of clones, the fact that Ian was not the first Ian and perhaps will not be the last.

As with the series as a whole, the characterizations are brilliant, and the moody and evocative writing put you ‘inside’ young Ian’s head. As for Irons, he is not drawn as a cartoon villain, but rather a complex and powerful man who does what he must to win the ultimate game.  It’s all completely in-character yet startlingly original and it’s told with a biting humor that fits the dark tone of the story.  I cannot recommend this story highly enough.  Even for those who have no knowledge of canon, this fanfic can stand on its own.

[Added: 06/13/04 | Irons Ian ]

A short vignette that’s not much more than a PWP, but I love it for its truly twisted view of Irons’ ‘ownership’ of Ian.  This is sex, but it is sex with a very clear purpose- and the purpose has very little to do with pleasure and everything to do with control.  This is pretty much exactly how I view Ian and Irons’ relationship, and the fact the interlude is inspired by jealousy just makes it that much better.  It’s a dark, twisted little story that will make you ache.

Jessica Roberts
Homepage [Added: 06/13/04 | ]

Set during the first season, this mid-sized tale finds Sara heading to Chicago as the key witness in a mob related case. Her dark shadow follows along to keep her safe, but ends up taking a much more active role in Sara’s life than Irons had ever intended.

Jessica is one of my favorite authors in this fandom, and I’d recommend any of her stories.  This is probably my favorite, as it’s self-contained, has plenty of action and a solid plot, and very nicely depicts the complicated relationship between Ian, Sara and Irons.  I think that’s my favorite thing about Jessica’s stories, the way she balances the interactions between the trio.  She also writes one of my favorite Sara voices- cynical and a bit world-weary, but never a bitch.  This is good fic, and a good intro to this author’s work.

MacGeorge
Homepage [Added: 06/13/04 | Irons Ian Methos Duncan Sara]

This is a long Highlander/Witchblade x-over, and the only fully developed Ian/Irons story I’ve found.  Unfortunately, it’s also the only Witchblade story MacGeorge has written- though the author is a prolific and well known one to the Highlander fen.  Damn shame she hasn’t written more Witchblade, because this is great stuff.  The plot is very complex, serving to prove that when the Witchblade is involved, there’s no such thing as a coincidence.  It begins with Ian and Irons taking a trip to England to meet with Dr. Adam Pierson concerning an ancient text.  While there, they meet the Dr.’s close friend, Duncan MacLeod.  Duncan turns down Ian’s request to become his teacher, but both he and Methos recognize the mark of the Witchblade.  When the two immortals make a trip to the U.S., they again come into contact with Ian and Irons as well as making the aquaintance of the current Wielder.  Though a worried Methos insists they need to stay as far from the Witchblade as possible, Ian has raised Duncan’s protective instincts and Sara has caught his attention.  Add in another immortal who is out for Duncan’s blood and the fact that Irons is obsessed with immortality and intrigued by the idea that the Witchblade may not be his only route to achieving it, and the stage is set for a rousing adventure.

The relationships, both sexual and otherwise, are quite complex in this story.  Ian is clearly ‘owned’ by Irons, but his attraction to Duncan is undeniable, as is his bond to Sara.  Sara, too, is taken with the Highlander, and given that Duncan had known Elizabeth Bronte, nothing about that potential pairing is simple.  Finally, there’s Methos, who really just wants to get out of town- but damned if he’ll leave without Duncan.  Complex, plotty and very, very interesting- this story is highly recommended for both the Highlander fans and any Witchblade fan who isn’t dead set on a Sara/Ian story.  My main focus is on Ian, and I thought this was a really intriguing exploration of his possible evolution.  It’s not exactly how I see things, but it was a damned interesting ‘what if’.
