Shadowphoenix [Added: 01/23/04 | Harry Snape]This is a most excellent future fic, set almost 5 years after the fall of Voldemort. Seems that shortly after the battle, Harry went missing. Albus has finally found him- in a U.S. college of all places! Harry has partial amnesia and no memories at all of magic or his role in a wizarding war. To make matters even more complicated, there’s a new Dark Lord on the rise. Lucius Malfoy is stepping into the void created by Voldemort’s demise. What’s the best way for Malfoy to consolidate his power? Kill the ‘boy who lived’, of course. In order to protect Harry and help him regain his memory, Albus decides to send Snape. Yes, yes- the headmaster really needs to lay off the crack pipe! But Snape, being Snape, follows the old coot’s orders, thus ending up in a college dorm, wearing leather pants, and trying to get in tight with his new roommate. Are you beginning to see why I love this fanfic? I thought you might be! But for the more dense, I’ll just note that this story has it all- lots of action, plenty of plot and suspense, a crapload of humor (Snape and the microwave? Priceless!), and some great characterizations. I love this Snape- he’s got a biting wit that’s really brought out in both the internal and external dialogue. He’s also competent ‘Action!Snape’, which I dearly love. The evolution of his relationship with Harry is really enjoyable, and the hints of his history with Lucius add some nice depth to the whole situation. There are even some nicely realized OCs! Great story, highly rec’ed! As a happy bonus, the author’s working on a sequel, which I’ll no doubt be recommending once it’s done.
The story focuses on Ron, who is not my typical cuppa, and chess, which bores me to tears. I’ll admit to a particular fondness for stories that draw me in despite the fact they aren’t my usual ‘type’ and this story does just that. Of course, you will find plenty of (well written) Snape, which is why I gave the story a chance in the first place. I’m very glad I did.
The premise is a ‘chess championship’. The school winners (both a faculty winner and a student winner) go on to represent the school at an international competition. There are plenty of little details (such as each character’s style of chess set) that help flesh out the characterizations, and the author brings in a number of less focused on characters during the school playoffs. The use of chess was a really nifty way of delving into the personalities involved and the story itself simply flows. Once we get to the international level, there’s even a dose of Death Eater action, and Snape really gets to shine. A great little read that I just stumbled upon and was very glad I did.
tekalynn [Added: 03/16/04 | Harry Snape Dudley]This is a seriously AU fic set in a world where the Muggles have struck back at the wizarding world and virtually stamped out magic. Harry is ‘passing’ as a Muggle and living with a curiously sympathetic Dudley. All magic is strictly forbidden, and ‘deviant’ wizards are broken and then sold on the open market. Who should Harry come across at such a sale? Yup- Snape. This is a dark and melancholy story and not remotely cliche (as some such stories are). Oddly enough, one of the things I liked best about it was the relationship between Snape and Dudley. Go figure! I would love to see a sequel.
Yum! All of this author’s work is good and I really enjoy her take on Snape. This story is one of her ‘The Erastes Rites Stories’, which are based on the idea that many of the ‘old blood’ of the wizarding world engage in a Greek-like system of pederasty. It actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it- and the author lays it out very well. To sum things up, a reluctant Snape competes with an enthusiastic DADA professor for a chance to ‘mentor’ Harry. The characterizations are very sharp, the idea is an interesting one, and I very much enjoyed the glimpses into Snape’s personality. An excellent read.
kaiz [Added: 03/16/04 | Harry Snape]This is a nice long and very, very clever Snape/Harry future fic. It begins as a chapter in “The New History of Hogwarts”, laying out the discovery of the ‘Unconscionables’ (curses) by Potter and Snape. Interspersed within the ‘chapter’ are the actual events as the characters experience them. It’s a nifty stylistic approach, and my description doesn’t really do it justice. Speaking as someone who always wonders how the ‘history on the books’ compares to real events, I particularly enjoyed this extra little detail!
For a short summary, the story is set well after Voldemort’s fall (at Harry’s hands). With his death, a new menace has arisen- basically a ‘magical mafia’. Snape, Harry and other familiar OotP members are hard at work combating the new enterprise and the story offers plenty of action/adventure, considerable doses of humor, and enough interesting pairings to please just about anyone. I enjoyed this story on many levels- the writing is excellent, there’s some neat magical theory, the characters are very appealing and if not always dead-on with current canon, I can see them having evolved to their current (future) states. I particularly liked Snape- who is competent, acerbic, prickly and self-protective and very much resistant to the idea that Harry could actually be interested in him. This story is a great ride with something for just about everyone.
This is a lovely twist on “Beauty and the Beast”, full of action, angst, world-building, and enjoyable characterizations. This is an intricately plotted tale and the author creates a world of her own that in many ways reminds me of Tolkien’s work. Novel length and very dark, it will suck you in and make you believe in the world created.
The story is set somewhat in the future, after Voldemort’s apparent fall at the hands of Harry Potter, who was also lost in the final battle. The story begins with Snape riding his horse through the Forbidden Forest. An accident thrust him through a magical barrier and into a hidden realm populated by not-quite-house elves and their sinister Master. To reveal more would spoil the story, so I won’t.
I’m not overly keen on the Snape/Hermione pairing, but this fic (and its sequel) is a lovely long adventure and well worth reading for any Snape fan. Expect plenty of plot, lots of action, well considered and realized characterizations, and just the right touch of romance and sweetness (by which I mean, not too much). It’s a future fic, the ‘kids’ now 26 and out in the real world. Hermione works as a researcher at the Ministry of Magic, and she’s the one Harry turns to when his work as an Aurora brings him into contact with a mysterious- and dangerous- potion. Acting without Ministry approval, Hermione’s efforts bring her into contact with Professor Snape, as well as dark worlds and darker creatures. An unlikely alliance is formed, and the result is a rousing action/adventure tale within which a story of love begins to bloom.
The story hits on a lot of personal kinks- much of the story is really a long ‘chase’, as Snape and Hermione first must escape from a shadowed realm and then Snape must escape from a suspicious Ministry. I love those types of stories, and the attraction between S/H is slow to build and very believable. This is as far from a PWP as it is possible to get. The characterizations are also dead on- and I really enjoyed this version of Snape. He’s never a ‘nice guy’, but he is portrayed as very much an honorable and competent man. This is simply great stuff. I won’t delve into the sequel, as I hate to spoil things, but it continues the most excellent story telling. I didn’t think ‘Darkness’ needed a sequel, but once I read “Survivals” I realized I was mistaken!
This Snape/Hermione future fic is the sequel to ‘Other Side of Darkness’. It continues the rousing adventure and subtle romance.
marinarusalka [Added: 03/18/04 | Snape Sirius]A lovely little fic that hits almost all of my personal kinks. Set prior to OotP, it kicks off with Snape being summoned by Malfoy- and instructed to bring along Veritaserum. Turns out Black has been captured, and Malfoy intends to interrogate him. I always enjoy stories that put Snape in the position of juggling his Death Eater duties with his OotP responsibilities, and this is a nice example. I also enjoy Snape and Black being reluctant allies. Most of all, I enjoy cutting, snarky characterizations, and this tale has that in spades. I seriously cracked up at:
Most of the time, despite the ridiculous Muggle proverb, Snape had found that Misery did not, in fact, love Company. Misery wanted Company to bugger off and die so that Misery could sulk in peace. Screaming Agony, on the other hand, liked Company just fine, mostly because Company provided an alternate target.
Snerk. It goes without saying that I loved the Snape characterization and the bit of Snape-torture was just icing on the fanfic cake. If you want plenty of action and sardonic humor, you’ll find it here. A great read that I’ve visited more than once.
The story must be set during the summer after 5th year and kicks off with a note from Harry to Sirius. It seems Voldemort has another plan to capture Harry and it’s up to Sirius, Lupin, Snape and the rest to stop him. The story isn’t quite as Snape-centric as I usually prefer, as the rest of the characters get pretty much equal billing, but the Snape we do get hits all of my kinks in a very big way. Snape’s back with the DE’s, working as Dumbledore’s spy, and he’s really a rather noble/martyr type here. I completely groove on that shit! There’s still plenty of snark and a cynical acceptance of the fact he’s going to die in agony at Voldemort’s feet and I’m happy to eat that sort of characterization up with a very big spoon. If you like the idea of Snape stumbling back from multiple sessions of Cruciatus to report to Dumbledore, then sucking it up to go back again, then you’ll love this story.
[Just a note- as someone who has broken their leg, I had a few quibbles with parts of the story, but was more than happy to overlook them in order to get my kinks scratched!]
I really enjoy this future fic. It’s set 3+ years after Voldemort’s defeat. The victory, if it could be called such, resulted in the death of Dumbldore, the fall of Hogwarts, and the end to magic in Britain. Fearing contamination, the isle was quarantined and the few surviving wizards and witches left to survive as Muggles.
This fanfic could have easily been made into two stories. The first half focuses on Snape and Toby. Toby is a ‘crup’, a sort of magical version of a dog. When Snape finds the injured stray crup, it’s significant because it’s the first sign of magic since Voldemort’s fall. While this vision of Snape isn’t the prickly, snarky, flirt’n with disaster type of characterization I usually prefer, it does ring true as a ‘future’ version who has lived through the deaths of almost everyone and everything important to him. This is a tired and resigned Snape who has attempted to escape into the wilderness. The joy in reading the story comes from seeing him slowly made to care again- for a crup. If I had to pick one word to describe the first half of the story, it would be ‘poignant’. It’s not sappy and it’s not slow- it’s just sort of sadly sweet. Great reading, with a bit of action mixed in.
The second half of the story picks up the pace and brings more characters into play. Harry makes an appearance and Snape takes the lead in attempting to ‘bring the magic back’. I enjoyed seeing what was left of the wizarding community come together and I particularly liked the competent Snape action. Though the characters aren’t exactly plucked from the pages of OotP, I can buy this future version of the world. It’s a good ‘what if’ and a nice long read. I gotta admit, though- it’s the ‘crup’ part that really captured my heart in this story!
Everybody and their brother has recommended this short story, and with good reason. The author has it rated at PG-13, but this is a story I’d print out and read with the littlest of kids. It’s set around Christmas of 5-6th year, and starts with Hermione of alone, practicing on becoming an animagus. When she finally succeeds, she gets stuck!! Who should find her but Professor Snape.
The story is cute and sweet and not the least bit dark. The writing is excellent and gives us truly appealing versions of Snape, Hermione and a cast of other familiar faces. As an added bonus, the illustrations are guaranteed to make you grin. This is required reading and publishable stuff.
Set post GoF, we begin with a ‘Ron plan’ designed to make potions class a bit more tolerable. He gives a kitten a dose of love potion and then sics it on Professor Snape. The beginning of the story is just cute, as a snarky Snape has to deal with a smitten kitten. When he goes bitching to Dumbledore, I had to crack up. The author has obviously owned cats, because she(?) does a great job of giving us a peek into the cat brain. She also does a nice job with Snape, who keeps the snark, but mellows a bit as he comes to accept his new pet. The second half of the story plunges us into the action, as Snape is called to a DE meeting (he’s working as Dumbledore’s spy). Seems Voldemort is planning a big attack on Hogwarts, and its defense is the focus of the later part of the tale.
The story isn’t flawless, there are a few glitches with paragraphing and Snape may be a little too nice by the end, but overall this was a very enjoyable read. My favorite part was the mellowing of Snape at the paws of a kitten, but I also got my Noble!Snape kink as an added bonus.
The story kicks off in 7th year with a tornado which swoops down, grabs up the cottage in which Ron, Hermione, Harry and Snape have taken shelter, and deposits them all in some barren waste where magic appears not to work.
“This is horrible,” Weasley said, waving his own wand around. “What is it? A hex? A curse?”
“I think it’s just Kansas,” Hermione said.
Hee. The story is a lot of fun, and my favorite parts have to do with Snape’s interactions with the Kansas natives as he tries to arrange transport back to Hogwarts. It’s funny as all hell and really kind of sweet- and I can actually picture the rural Kansas women swooning a bit over the tall, dark and foreboding potions master. Another nifty thread that runs through the story is, of course, the play on the ‘Wizard of Oz’ theme. This element is played up more in the beginning and the end of the story- and I very much liked it. In fact, it’s something I wouldn’t have minded seeing more of, perhaps at the expense of the more romantic parts to the story. Yes, this is also a first time Snape/Harry story and Ron and Hermione are also paired. I preferred the more ‘gen’ elements, but the romance fans should be well pleased. We even get a little Voldemort action, though I don’t want to spoil that part. Expect some great humor, nice plot, hint of action, and some romance. In short, something for nearly everyone in this fairly lengthy read.
debchan [Added: 03/18/04 | Snape Voldemort]Oh, this story is so much fun!! It’s a crossover with Terry Pratchett’s ‘Discworld’, but if you know nothing about the books, don’t worry- you don’t need to. The author does a nice job of introducing the new characters (Esmerelda “Granny” Weatherwax and Gytha “Nanny” Ogg ) enough for you to understand what’s going on, and the emphasis in this story is on the humor. It’s not a massively long story, but it’s a lot of fun. There’s lots of sex of all types (het, slash and a bit of bestiality- but it’s mostly mentioned in passing and not remotely explicit) and there’s drunkenness and someone drops a house on someone. Oh, yea -you won’t believe what happens to Voldemort!! Expect action, adventure, kitty porn- and mostly a nice big dollop of humor that’s very much in keeping with the Discworld sense of the absurd.
~iibnf [Added: 03/18/04 | Snape McGonagall]This is a short fic set during Snape’s first year of school. He’s taking Transfiguration and doing badly. You’ll discover why in this very sweet story that focuses on his interactions with his teacher, Professor McGonagall. I like this one for the characterizations of both young Snape and McGonagall and because it brings up an issue I’d always kind of wondered about. Really, really nice characterizations and just a very sweet read.
This massively talented writing team gives us a hilarious glimpse into the early days of the Slytherin-Gryffindor rivalry in this series of short (and not so short) stories. For the Gryffindors, we have the four Marauders, while on the Slytherin side we have Lucius Malfoy, Gavin Goyle, Vincent Crabbe, and of course, Snape. The stories aren’t really canon, the boys on both sides are much less malicious and quite honestly more fun to read about. The Snape characterization is an absolute jewel, and again, something I prefer to actual canon. The writing is also some of the best of seen in the fandom. These stories leave a smile on my face and you really can’t go wrong giving them a shot.
ozmaz [Added: 03/18/04 | Snape Filch]I’m surprised there aren’t more good ‘missing scene’ fanfics in the Harry Potter realm. Given that the books are told from Harry’s point of view, there’s tremendous potential for such fics. This is a nice example, and is set during ‘Sorcerer’s Stone’. It picks up shortly after the troll attack, with Filch cleaning up a trail of fresh blood while tracking down its owner. The writing is solid and the story just to fit the canon while expanding on the story. I’m recommending it because this was always a scene I had wondered about and I like the version this fanfic delivers. If you like this one, the author has a whole series of stories told from Filch’s POV, many involving Snape.
marinarusalka [Added: 03/18/04 | Snape Harry]The ‘Plague’ in question is ‘Skittles’, sort of a wizarding version of the chicken pox that manifests as multi-colored spots (snerks at bad pun). Harry comes down with a bad case of it and unfortunately infects the esteemed potions Master. (No, the polka dot plague is NOT an STD. Pervert.) The bulk of the story explores Snape and Harry’s convalescence together, though the climax of the tale is a bit of an action/adventure. For a rather simple premise, there is an impressive amount of plot, and I don’t want to spoil it, so I wont say more with regard to that.
What makes this story really shine is the writing and the characterizations. Snape is exactly how I like him- snarky, intelligent, egotistical and yet guarded, and reluctantly heroic. I particularly like the author’s interpretation of ‘Snape the teacher’. The books aren’t all that clear on what kind of ‘Head of House’ Snape is. Written from Harry’s point of view, it’s really been a bit of a non-issue. However, I like the idea that Snape is something of a guardian for the ‘black sheep’ of Hogwarts. That perspective comes through clearly in this story. There’s a bit about Snape and gifts of hand-knitted clothing that just made me grin. Little details like that make for great story telling. Snape the reluctant father figure is a personal kink, and one this fic strokes (hence my marriage proposal). The characterization of the pre-OotP Harry (and the story is told largely from his POV) is also excellent. This is a story I’d classify as a ‘must read’.
This is not exactly a fanfic, it’s a series of illustrations spawned by hp100‘s “Mirror of Erised” drabble challenge. It’s also one of the nicest characterizations of Snape I’ve seen, all summed up in a few panels. Sweet, sad, beautiful, and very much how I see the character. Sheer genius, if I do say so myself.
This is a very strange little story, beautifully told. Snape takes offense when McGonagall disparages potion making one time too many. He decides to show her that the whole ‘Transformations’ thing is not as hard as she makes out. So he practices. A lot. And sure enough, one happy day, Snape becomes an Animagus. Well, no. Actually, he cocks it up rather impressively. On the plus side, Snape always has been one to make the best of a bad situation. Hm- maybe not, but this time he does, and the results are hilarious. I really don’t want to spoil the fic by giving too much away. What I will say is that this is a delightful read (seriously- best adjective I could come up with). It’s fun and oddly sexy, has a wonderful Snape voice (acerbic, witty, more than a bit convinced he’s surrounded by utter morons) and an appealing version of Harry. It’s simply a blast! Go read.
amanuensis1 [Added: 03/29/04 | Snape Harry ]Oh, this is a bad, bad, evil fanfic. I recommend you go read it right away!! It’s a Dark!Harry fic, set after Voldemort’s defeat. Harry is the new man in charge, and he’s not willing to let anyone defy his rule. The story is patterned after ‘Henry V’, and while you need no familiarity with Shakespear (or history) to enjoy the story, part of my love for this one is rooted in my admiration for the brilliant job the author does of drawing parallels. Right from the beginning, when ‘The Heirs of Slytherin’ send Harry the gift of a snitch (a la France and the tennis balls), you KNOW that this fic was aptly titled. It’s just so bloody cool to watch the whole thing unfold- how old friends must fit into a new world order, betrayals and vengeance, the freaking owlery, the price of peace… Jeesh- it just all blew me away.
Now, even without the ‘Henry V’, I’d dig this fic for the Snape characterization. I really enjoy the unique nature of his relationship with this new ‘dark Harry’. And while reading along, waiting to get to the Snape goodness, I also enjoyed the thoughtful portrayals of Sirius, Ron and Hermione. This world, it’s a little twisted, a little off- but it’s a real pleasure to read. I love a clever, well written story that does something different, and this fic definitely fits the bill.
isiscolo [Added: 04/05/04 | Hermione ]Oh, I do love a clever fic! This one is just yummy, in a sneaky, sly, reprehensible sort of way. It’s very short, focuses on Hermione, and is told entirely through newspaper clippings (starting in 2005). It’s a story that creeps up on you and leaves you blinking- wondering if what you think happened really did happen. Why, yes. Yes it did. Hee!
isiscolo [Added: 04/05/04 | Snape Sirius ]Hee! Short fic, set post graduation at Harry’s wedding. Who’s he marrying? Who knows? Who cares? All of my attention is focused on a dark corner in the back of the room, where Sirius Black has plopped down in a chair next to everybody’s favorite potions master. They proceed to drink and trade verbal barbs- and perhaps something more! The story is almost totally dialogue, and the clever word play is simply a blast. I can actually imagine this conversation happening (in a reality where Sirius didn’t die, of course)- which says a lot, given Snape and Black’s opinions of each other. Cute and very amusing.
~iibnf [Added: 04/05/04 | Snape Hooch]Hmmmm. Well. Um. Really, the title pretty much says it all! HEE! This is a short PWP (the type of thing I NEVER recommend) that finds Snape and Hooch sitting outside, smoking fags, and just generally bitching about what a bad day each has had. Of course, there’s always one sure-fired way to cheer up- and the fact that both Snape and Hooch are gayer than track lighting need not be an insurmountable obstacle! This fic, it’s a must read for the dialogue- some of the best I’ve seen in fanfic. It’s just damned sweet and funny as all hell. Highly, highly recommended.

scribbulus_ink [Added: 04/09/04 | Trelawney Snape]Oh, this is a sly, sneaky, fun little fic! It seems Trelawney is prophesizing Snape’s doom. For obvious reasons, Snape is not overly concerned- until the prophecies start coming true!! Thankfully, Trelawney may have a way to help Snape avoid his tragic fate. It’s short, it’s funny, and it has a lot of style. Definitely a read worth a few minutes of your time.
This Snape focused fic is set after the final war against Voldemort has been fought and won and the surviving members of Harry’s class have graduated. Snape has agreed to teach for one more school year, and then he will be free of the dratted children who have plagued him most of his life. In an uncharacteristic move, he agrees to let a small group of students use his classroom for their ‘games club’. This is a nice, longish exploration of the highlights of that year and Snape’s adjustment to post-war life.
There’s a lot about this story I like. The Snape characterization is one that very much appealed to me, though he is definitely a bit more on the ‘nice’ side. He’s still got the snark, but this is a kinder, gentler Snape. I think it works in the post-war atmosphere. I also enjoy the way the story raises issues concerning the problems inherent in Hogwarts’ ‘house’ system and the inter-house rivalries it generates. Finally, I like the way the story is told- how the backstory emerges organically rather than through exposition dumps. Good story, with good Snape and Remus and some very appealing original characters in the form of Snape’s young charges.
flambeau [Added: 04/23/04 | Snape Sirius Remus]Set sometime post-GoF, the story has Snape, Lupin and Sirius reluctantly joining together to perform a complex spell. When the men learn the nature of the spell, they are even more loathe to work together. However, Dumbledore has deemed it important to the war effort, so they reluctantly comply. To explain much more would spoil it. This story really stands out due to its lush, detailed writing. Very descriptive, without ever intruding on the story. The characterizations also sparkle, and I particularly like this version of Snape. It reads very much as I tend to see him- disagreeable, stubborn, unwilling to let a grudge go, and often juvenile in his continued insults to Remus and Sirius. However, he still remains both sympathetic and even brave, in a way that is utterly real. Great, great stuff. This isn’t really a story I can see taking place after OotP. But post-Goblet of Fire- yes, I can definitely see things going this way. (The Remus and Sirius fans should also enjoy- and I thought the issues brought up concerning the Shrieking Shack incident really added to the story.)
lizbee [Added: 04/23/04 | Hermione Snape]This Hermione focused short story is a cross-over with Sandman, in which Hermione discovers a long forgotten potion recipe hidden in the school library. Her insatiable curiosity leads her to brew the potion and enter ‘the dreaming’. It’s short, but I really enjoyed it for two reasons. First, it’s beautifully written. It’s a very distant pov, not quite omniscient but very detached and dream-like. In short, the mood fits the story perfectly. The second draw for me is also related to the style- it has to do with the characterizations and backstory that come out when reading this fic. The author doesn’t give you easy answers as to what’s going on, just hints that flow organically from the story telling. It’s very, very nice. I enjoyed it AND appreciated the skill with which it was crafted. Good stuff.
This is not a flawless fic, but it’s one I find very interesting. Set post-GoF, it is really a mystery tale that follows the trio as the attempt to decipher a mystery that began with Hogwarts’ founders. Seems Slytherin was up to… something, the details of which are hinted at in a book Hermione has acquired. However, the mystery concerns not only the past, but the present- and both Harry and Snape are beginning to suspect Dumbledore is up to something. It’s a really enjoyable read- there really aren’t enough good mysteries in fanfic. I also like the characters’ voices and the action elements in the tale (Voldemort is of course around to cause trouble). However, I do have some quibbles. There is one chapter toward the middle that inexplicably changes to a Snape pov and rehashes events from the prior chapter. It’s just odd, and I had no idea what was going on for a few minutes. Also, the plan behind the mystery.... Well, I’m not sure it is without holes. A sequel might have made for a stronger story overall, and the author has declared that there will be no sequel. Still, this is something different, it’s well written and it quite sucked me in. If you like gen and plot and suspense, I think it’s well worth a look.
