Oh, this is good, good fic- very much what I want out of a MUNCLE story! It tells the tale (from Napoleon’s POV) of how Illya and Napoleon first met and came to work together. Illya’s scientific side is on full display, as he’s brought into U.N.C.L.E. as a research- one of the guys who designs all of those nifty little gadgets they use. Not everyone is happy to have a ‘commie’ working in HQ, but Napoleon is more than willing to welcome him on board. Illya- to no one’s surprise- is VERY good at what he does. But is research all the cagey Russian is up to? You’ll have to read to find out. I really loved the first half of this story- excellent characterizations (I enjoy the wry, witty, competent portrayal of Illya) combined with plenty of plot and action. The second half gets more into the slashy side of things and I’d pretty much guessed where the plot was going, but it’s well written and still has plenty of action (of all kinds!). Good, good fic. Very nice Illya.
Good, angsty fic that takes a couple of fanfic cliches and plays them out beautifully. This is a revenge yarn- someone is out to get Illya, and they know the best way to do that is through his partner. There’s mind control, Napoleon torture, Illya torture (his is all mental- and VERY well done) and the whole discovering ‘I’m in love with my best friend’ thing. Nice characterizations of both guys and I love the little details that make it clear these two men treasure the bond between each other more than anything else. It’s all very effective and manages to not be heavy handed- which can be difficult with this sort of plot. Good action, plot and characterizations- I like this author quite a bit.
Found this on crackvan, and it seriously kicks ass. It picks up just after the ‘Children’s Night Affair’ episode, which you don’t need to know anything about. Suffice it to say, in the episode, Illya was tied down and whipped by the main villianess. (And people wonder why I loved that show!) The fanfic picks up with the head of one of the European branches of U.N.C.L.E., Carlo Farenti, talking to Waverly about his top team. Seems Farenti wants Illya to take over as top agent in Europe. Waverly is less than thrilled at the idea of losing one of his best men. Farenti tries to make his case by pointing out that perhaps Illya and Napoleon are a little too close. Waverly objects to the insinuation, but can’t help pondering the possibility.
I like the story on a lot of levels. First, it’s very clever. Virtually the whole thing is told from Waverly’s pov, and the author really makes that work. It’s fascinating to read Waverly’s thoughts, and follow along as he tries to understand Illya and Napoleon’s relationship. It also gives us some very sweet glimpses of the boys in action. As an added bonus, it creates and expands on some very interesting background for Illya and gives a very plausable picture of how he came to work for U.N.C.L.E. It’s different, and good, and has great characterizations. Highly recommended!
brenantrim [Added: 09/21/04 | Napoleon Illya ]Oh, this is a fun fic! It’s proof that the oldest cliche in the book can be polished diamond bright in the hands of a skillful writer. You know the one about Illya and Solo getting dosed with truth serum? You know what happens afterward, don’t you? Well, this is that story told with a boatload of style and humor- and wrapped up in a pretty good plot to ferret out a THRUSH mole as well! A tremendously fun fic that still manages to nail the characterizations. I can just see Illya’s disgruntled/bemused expression in my head as Solo natters on about his abused wardrobe:
“… I have a reputation to keep up!”
Illya opened his mouth to say … something … anything … to end the harangue before Mr. Waverly stopped turning puce and actually shot his number one agent (if only to shut him up). Unhappily, his tongue started working before his brain could catch up. “Yes, and we all know what that is. Truth be told, Napoleon, I don’t know why you worry about your suits, when you don’t keep the zippers up and the trousers covering you long enough to know you even put them on.” His hand clapped over his mouth instinctively. Where on earth had that come from?
