I have a fondness for ‘5 Things’ fics- probably because the format encourages ‘plottiness’. I’m a sucker for a nifty idea! Fortunately, RivkaT is one of my favorite Smallville writers, and really does justice to the format with this fic. I definitely enjoyed the first ‘thing’, in which Lex ‘catches’ Cassandra’s power. Can Clark help him to overcome the visions? Well, he can certainly try: Clark kissed like an insurrection, razing everything in its path. The third ‘thing’ was also a favorite- one I wouldn’t minded seeing more of. It’s very AU, based on the idea that after the meteor shower, Lex was in a coma for 12 years- but didn’t age. When he wakes up, Lionel takes him to the castle in Smallville- and a new ‘nanny’- Martha Kent. Really cool story! The last of the ‘things’ was just plain devious- creepy chill down your spine kind of good. There’s also a sad one and another AU that didn’t knock me dead- but I’d say that if you like Lex, you’re bound to get a kick out of at least one of these. Good writer- lots of interesting ideas.
This is an odd story, chronicling Clark’s descent into hell in an effort to save a version of Lex who may not want saving. Though it is a future fic, set post-rift and after Clark has donned the Superman mantel, it reads much more like a dream than reality. Thamiris’ writing is always very lush, very descriptive, and never more so than here, in the portrayal of a surreal and fluid world. It’s not a long story or even terribly ‘plotty’, but it’s interesting enough and the conceptualization of hell, Lex and Lionel fascinated me. Very different.
This is a short, really more five little snippets of Clark/Lex stories. Not as developed as most of the things I’d rec. The first ‘thing’ I found interesting and dark, the next 3 snippets didn’t make much of an impression, but the last idea! Oh, yes, that’s a nifty one. Lionel comes to Lex, and makes a revelation- or should I say, Revelations. No, probably I shouldn’t. Anyway, cool idea, and inspiration for Te- who took the idea and ran with it. The whole thing is a quick read- and worth it for that last snippet if nothing else.
Ah, this is a lovely story that combines humor and hot sex and tons of angst- and it has spoilers for the Bible. What more can you ask for in a fanfic? This is a nice big chunk of a story that has Clark and Lex fighting to be together despite the wishes of both Heaven and Hell.
This is NOT part of the Basingstoke/Te universe, and I’ll note a big Lex/Lionel incest warning for those squicked by such things- or for those who seek it out ;o). Disclaimers aside, this is an interesting and intense tale set very much within the ‘Brimstone’ framework. Zeke even shows up, guarding Satan’s back. I loved Zeke! You’ll also find find Clark and Lionel/Satan fighting for Lex’s soul. In this war, sex is very much a weapon. Note- I do have a few quibbles with this story, particularly Lex calling Lionel ‘daddy’. Cringe. It says a lot that I’m recommending it anyway.
This is my favorite of these stories. It roughly follows the happenings in ACIP and Wilderness- by I believe 3 months. Lex is very conflicted in this story, and decides it’s time to act. This is a version of Lex I really like- he’s smart, proactive, and a little psychotic. OK- he’s a lot psychotic, but I like that. I think I prefer this story because I don’t quite see Lex ‘broken’ like I do in the others. Or maybe he is broken, but kinda sorta ‘fixed’- in that way that leaves you bent and different, yet stronger than before. I also like the way Clark reacts to Lex’s betrayal. It rang true for me. Like I say- this one is a bit different than the other three, and it’s more in tune with the type of story I like.
This is my favorite story of the 3 that explore Clark’s ‘fall from Grace’ in Lex’s eyes- and Lex’s fall from sanity! I’ll have to figure out what makes it my favorite later on. It has an ‘unofficial’ sequel Wilderness, which picks up with Lionel trying to reward his son for finally doing the right thing and putting family first. With Lionel, family is EVERYTHING and he gives Lex a reason to believe that the family he had sacrificed for could provide everything for him. Um- yea. Everything. It’s short and VERY dark but I rather liked it.
Very interesting, very dark, very well written (slightly) future fic. I’m recommending it for two reasons. First, it really is well written and tightly constructed. Second, it’s earned quite a bit of discussion on both TWoP and on various blogs. Some folks adore it and pretty much everyone agrees it’s an interesting and well written fic. It’s a fairly standard premise- Lex discovers Clark’s secret and does not react well. (Yes, Lionel is partly at fault.) I mean, Lex REALLY doesn’t react well. Which is, of course, where some of the controversy lies. Still, it’s a great read, it brings up some interesting questions concerning Clark’s origins and purpose, and you really can’t debate the merits of the story until, well, you’ve read it! LJ discussion Pt.1, Pt.2.
is a nice example. I particularly like how that author explores the process of Lex trying to change his view of Clark from a ‘him’ to an ‘it’. FayJay also brings up the idea that Lex sees the alien as a potential threat to humanity, possibly the beginnings of invasion. Whether this is simply a rationalization on Lex’s part, or a result of his naturally cynical nature (or hell- it’s really not that outlandish a thought upon learning aliens ‘walk among us’) is unclear- and no doubt meant to be.
A short bit of smutty fun, this fic is an x-over with ‘Austin Powers’. Lex and Scott Evil hook up at a convention for ‘Evil Masterminds’ and proceed to do ‘evil’ stuff. Like have ‘evil’ sex and piss off their respective fathers. Pure silliness, but it never fails to put a smile on my face!
Lex’s morning in Vegas starts off kinda crappy, what with the dead girl he finds in his room. I hate it when that happens! Fortunately, the CSI team is on the case. Unfortunately, Lex is the prime suspect. Clark and Helen both rush to Lex’s side- causing quite a bit of smirking on the part of the CSI agents. Did Lex do it? Is it some evil plot by Lionel? Will Lex have Mercy and Hope kill everybody and then make a run for the border? Read to find out.
As much as the plot makes this sound like a murder mystery, that’s not really the strongest element in this mid-sized read. What I adored about it was the Clark/Lex relationship. I absolutely love stories in which Clark is Lex’s moderating influence- the one who keeps him human. What can I say, I have a thing for irony. But yea- it’s the little things in this fic- the way that everyone who knows Lex knows to call in Clark when the ‘boss’ is feeling irritable. Just a cute, schmoopy tale, all wrapped up in a mystery. To quote CSI’s Nick “Man, was that sappy or what?”
You should read this because the world needs more ‘Pimp Daddy Clark’ fics. And pie. More pie, more pimps. Really- isn’t that reason enough? (But the kick ass writing style and dry, acerbic, world-weary but not without hope characterization of Lex doesn’t hurt.) It’s a fairly quick AU read, set in a Metropolis where Clark is in college and Lex never went to Smallville. Check it out.
Read this again on referral from TWOP. It’s future fic, no rift, told in 2nd person (which I usually hate, but quite enjoy in this story). It’s a Clark/Superman POV, and aptly titled. It’s all about Lex behaving recklessly, and even Clark starts to suspect he’s doing it to get Superman’s attention. Which he does. Which results in sex. Which makes Clark insanely jealous. Hee! Those are my favorite parts- Clark being jealous of Superman. Like this line: ‘Of course, there’s something wrong’, you want to say. ‘Superman is fucking my best friend.’
I enjoy stories that play up the dichotomy between Clark and Superman, and I enjoy the portrayal of Lex we get (as seen through Clark’s eyes and the reader’s ability to interpret things in a way Clark does not). As mentioned, the 2nd person Clark pov works really well for me in this story. It moves very quickly. There aren’t many surprises storyline-wise, but I enjoyed the style and the characterizations. It was a clever way to tell the tale. I’m not sure why I haven’t rec’ed it before. Maybe because it’s not a very substantial story, but it’s different and an enjoyable read.
This is a fun, established relationship future fic that has Clark, Lex and Lois going out to dinner together. Clark wants Lois and Lex to make nice. Lex isn’t so thrilled with the idea, mostly because Lois and Clark have been ‘more than friends’ in the past. When Clark has to bag out of the dinner due to a ‘Super-emergency’, you just know that things are not going to go smoothly. You’d be right, but probably not in the way you think. This is a fun story, light on the romance, heavy on the action-adventure. I liked the characterizations of all three characters and I always enjoy ‘action Lex’. I also appreciated the writing style, which is clean and clear and does a nice job of avoiding ‘exposition dumps’, instead letting the backstory play out organically. There’s not a tremendous amount of mystery or suspense, but the core plot worked to keep my interest and the Lois and Lex interactions added spice.
Oh lordy, I laughed so hard I damn near wet myself. HEE! So, does it ever bother you, reading all of those ‘first time’ fics, where one (or both) character is a virgin yet the sex is perfect, they have four simultaneous orgasms while using magic condoms on their self-lubricating pricks? I mean, my first time? Really, not all that great. (And yes- TMI!) Anyhoo, this fic is for those of us who can appreciate the idea that ‘first times’ are not always perfect. Really, really not perfect! It’s the fairly short tale, told completely through dialogue, of Clark and Lex’s first time. Now, Lex does try to talk Clark through it, but what with the zipper, the pubes, the armoire, the ‘lube’.... Did I mention the ‘I love you’? Hee- funny and really quite sweet, this fic gave me a happy!
Part of the Remix Challenge, this story hits the ground running. Specifically, it hits the ground with Lex running. I love a story that plops you down in the middle of the action and I love having to figure out what’s going on as I read. I get both of those itches scratched in this short story about Lex trying to save Clark, and maybe being too late. It doesn’t entirely punch me in the gut, but it grabbed my interest and had really nice characterizations of Lex and the more minor characters such as Chloe, Lana, Martha and Jon. The ending was also fun, with some nice bits of dialogue. Interesting, fun, angsty and sweet- all rolled up into one tight little package. Not unlike Lex himself!
It’s the year 2013, and Lex wakes up in a fortress made of ice with no memory of the past 10 years. It’s a gift Clark had not expected. This was one wish Kryptonite never could have granted. They would get it right this time.
Oh, this a very interesting, fairly lengthy fic. It kicks off right in the middle of the story, and you have to play ‘catch up’ to figure out the events that led up to Lex’s amnesia. The story’s told from Clark’s pov, and at first read is a very sweet, heartwarming tale. Really, it is. I love the relationship between Lex and Clark, I love the way Clark views Lex, how he sees greatness in him, and how he’s willing to shape the world so that they can be together. But you know what I really like? If you look close, this is dark and very creepy. You know why it’s hard to notice? Because from Clark’s pov, it all seems perfectly reasonable. This is good fic, whether you want to see the darkness in it or not.
Funny, funny future fic written with real style and flair! This is one of those stories that reminds you HOW something is written is generally more important than WHAT is written. This is a fairly long, established relationship Clark/Lex story based on the not uncommon premise that the emnity between Superman and Lex Luthor is a front. Clark is a reporter, working with a really nicely characterized Lois, and Lex’s live-in boyfriend. Superman is the superhero who interfers with Lex Luthor’s plans for world domination- and stuff. Also, there are sand worms and particle accelorators. Very cool fic with fun characterizations, a nice plot to pull it all together, and some deeper issues lurking below the surface fun.
As mention, my favorite thing in this story is really the style with which it was written. This isn’t really a ‘funny’ story, but the author simply has a flair for words and brings out the absurdity of the entire ‘superhero’ schtick: “Just tell me why you need a particle accelerator,” you ask reasonably, or as reasonably as anyone wearing a spandex cape and red go-go boots can. Your people had all the fashion sense of a Swedish disco. Hee! But as I mentioned, beneath the surface, there are some interesting issues raised. Clark really doesn’t want Lex building a particle accelerator- for a multitude of reasons. And the terrible interpersonal communications skills both Clark and Lex have are brought to the fore. These guys have a lot of the same issues canon Clark and Lex have- they just show up in this story surrounded by more humor and warmth. Still, they are issues that could pull the guys apart, and I really appreciated how this story dealt with said issue. For a story that’s a blast to read, this one’s a great choice. For a story that at its core is about complex relationships between two powerful (if sometimes immature men), well, this story is still a good choice!
This nice, long, plotty fic kicks some serious ass. It branches from canon during s2, with Lex and Lionel still locked in a battle over their respective companies- and more importantly, over Clark. When Lex discovers Clark’s secret, he’s willing to do anything to protect him. Whether Lex can ever trust him is another matter. As the threat from Lionel increases, Lex heads to Gotham for a little help from an old friend, a Clark who is eager to make amends in hot pursuit.
I like pretty much everything about this story, but what makes it a standout for me are the characterizations. I love Lex’s response upon discovering Clark’s secret- I love how he manages to be hurt and amazed and not as far from scientific curiosity as he would like to be. I love how he still places Clark first, despite all that. And this is a Clark who deserves it- a nice combination of the not-quite-innocence of season 1 with the stubbornness and independence of a more mature Clark. Bruce too is a nice addition, able to spark jealousy in both Clark and Lex. (I particularly liked his final lines to Lex!) I will grant you, this isn’t my preferred version of Lionel, but it is one I can easily see. All in all, a nice combo of action, plot, characterization and- oh, yea. Did I mention the sex!? If you feel the need for smut, you’ll find some here- all nice and wrapped up in a very good story.
Oh, this is good angst fic! The kind of story that cuts right to the bone. It’s long and AU, beginning when Clark is about 13. It splits from canon there, building a world in which Clark was ripped from his parents and dumped into the ‘loving’ arms of Lionel Luthor. Lionel is collecting meteor mutants- including his own son. This fic follows Clark, Lex and many other familiar faces from the series as they grow toward adulthood, always seeking to escape and live a ‘normal’ life. This is rough stuff, though never gratuitous. I love the idea and was particularly impressed by the author’s ability to weave canon into this AU world. It was fascinating to see how the relationships between the various mutants differed from canon- while remaining true to their core personalities. The bond between Clark and Lex was also wonderful- though the story is very low on smut, their commitment to each other forms the heart of the tale. And for such a bleak story, this one leaves you feeling good and hopeful. Great, great stuff!
This is a novel length entry in the ‘Identical series’ (book 9), and it’s a blast! Lots of plot, lots of action and a whole slew of characters taking on important roles. Pamela is back in this one, staying with the Kents and intent on thwarting both Lionel and Karloff. Pete and Chloe also become important in this story. Both are smarting over the fact that Clark has been ignoring them, and they suspect something is up with the newly viscious version of Lex. Lionel also figures prominantly, and he has clearly begun to fear the creature he has unleashed on the world. I have a definite fondness for stories that delve into the relationship between Lex and his father, and I found the tidbits of history that Lanning gives us fascinating. This story in the series is critical to the development of the Luthor relations. Lionel is aptly described as a jealous god, and I love how he bristles at the bond between Lex and the Kents. I really appreciate the complexity with which Lanning writes Lionel. He really is NOT a good man or a good father, but he is not a cardboard villain, either. As usual in this series, I love this version of Lex- tough on the outside but oh so vulnerable if one knows the right buttons to push. Finally, the last love scene between Lex and Clark was just sweet. I love Clark’s uncertainty and fear that he will hurt Lex just as much as I love a Lex who is afraid he will bring harm down on the Kents. ‘Lex will not let me hurt him,’- indeed. I love the bond those two share! Good story, all around. My only quibble- at this point, I agree with Pete. I’d let Eli waste Karloff. Honestly, anything else is insanity, and I’d have no qualms justifying it as self-defense.
A short vignette set two years after the events in ‘A Handful of Dust’ (read that one first), this story is more powerful and more chilling than anything this short has a right to be. What stuns me in this fic is how Clark manages to retain a certain innocence. It is completely at odds with what he has done, yet he still sees things in primary colors. I don’t question the fact that he loves Lex, nor do I question the fact that he is certain he is building a better world. Hell, he probably is. But damn, he’s a scary monster. The fact that Lex accepts it, that he embraces Clark and his vision… Damn. It’s powerful stuff. That part, that part Clark doesn’t like to think about, the part that ran and hid and fought him for so long--that part’s pushed aside, buried, broken, just for him. Broken more every day.
A fairly short future fic that’s a lot of fun. I have a fondness for stories set during Lex’s term as president, and this is a very clever approach to such a tale. It’s told from the pov of an OC, an investigative photojournalist who suspects that something is up with the youngest president to ever hold office. Of course, Lex’s youth is less controversial than the fact he’s also the first gay president. Yep, Lex and Clark are married in this one, but no one can quite understand what Lex sees in the bumbling reporter. The photojournalist is out to solve the mystery.
What makes this such a fun story is the fact that the reader already knows what the photojournalist doesn’t. It’s a kick to watch how things play out- and despite reader foreknowedge, you don’t know for certain how this story will end. I also liked the characterization of Lex. You can infer a lot about him and his relationship with Clark, despite the pov. It’s just a nice happy little slice of story that leaves me with a grin on my face.
This is a nice, plotty, mid-sized future fic set when Superman is with the JLA and he and Lex are enemies. I suspect there is a fair amount of JLA canon at work in this story, but my lack of knowledge in that regard in no way detracts from the read. The story is an action oriented tale that has the JLA battling Brainiac. Seems Brainiac is an AI who came to earth with Kal-El’s ship. Brainiac is pretty insistent on Superman taking over the world. Superman? Not so into the idea. Unfortunately, the AI isn’t about to take ‘no’ for an answer, and its ability to infiltrate any computer system AND take over human hosts makes it a formidable opponent. When the AI discovers a potentially perfect host in the form of meteor mutant Lex Luthor, even the JLA may be out-classed. Things are even more complicated by the fact Superman and Batman are keeping secrets from the rest of the JLA.
The plot is what makes this one shine for me. It’s very light on the romance, heavy on the action. Lex comes across as a supremely competent, a worthy advesary for both the JLA and the AI. The relationship between Batman and Superman is also intriguing, and the JLA politics were interesting. Mostly, I kept wondering how everything was going to work out- or IF it was going to work out. That’s the mark of a good story to me. It’s icing on the cake that I have some real suspicions with regard to ‘Jor-El’ on the show. This story could end up being a lot closer to Smallville canon than it first appears.
NOTE: it looks like Livia’s site is down at the moment, and I haven’t found another copy of this story on the net. However, I have added in her LJ info, so you want to keep up with things by checking in there. It does look like the plan is for the site to come back online. Keep your fingers crossed- it’s a good tale. And if anyone knows of another live link, drop me a line and I’ll add it in.
This is a nice, lengthy, plotty fanfic that starts like something from a fairytale. It’s set s2, after Lionel has regained his sight, and we begin with a creepy little man demanding payment from Luthor Sr. for services rendered. The payment involves the Luthor heir, and Lionel isn’t so keen on the idea. This sets the stage for the rest of the story, where it’s off to Smallville we go. What follows is an interesting exploration of Lex and his place in Smallville society- and I really enjoyed those bits. However, underlying it all is a sense of impending doom, as the creepy little man shows up and offers Lex a deal he just can’t refuse.
This story completely sucked me in, it’s a well crafted tale and the care with which it is all laid out maximizes the suspense. The Lex/Clark friendship vibe at the beginning was so satisfying and sweet, and the urge on both their parts to protect the other anchors the story. I also enjoyed the characterizations- Clark, Pete and Chloe work together to try and unravel the cause of the disastrous events that seem to be sweeping through Smallville. There’s no contrived, angsty romance triangle- just a group of good friends who care about each other and who think with their heads and not their.... Anyway, Lex is also good in this. I particularly liked how he tried to lay his curiosity, and his desire, regarding Clark to rest- but his obsession eats at him all the same. Lex’s flaws stem from his deep-seated need to belong, and while this is a weakness, there is also an underlying strength. The Lex/Lionel relationship, while not a focus, also added to the story’s appeal. Read this one for the great story and the excellent portrayals of a variety of characters and their ties to each other.
Ah- I love the beginning of this first story. It’s set just after Jitters, and Lex is using the bruises Earl gave him to earn a little town sympathy. Hurt and taking advantage of it- just how I like to see Lex. “Gratitude for saving their kids, shock at his personal visit and guilt over his pain - what better way to win their devotion? “ Yep- that’s Lex! He knows what it takes to win people’s hearts- and it’s the same thing I like to see in fanfic! Of course, the Kents aren’t going to let an obviously hurt young man walk away without at least making sure he’s alright, and that’s where the story takes off. Clark gets a bit possessive when his dad takes a look at Lex’s bare back- and we discover that this version of Clark is truly alien. The story’s a lot of fun, and though Alien!Clark is a LOT more alpha than I’m used to, in this fanfic, Lex still holds his own. Brains over brawn, you know. Fun, well written, and very different, especially in the portrayal of Clark.
(Note- by author’s request, the link will go to the home page. I suggest you do a search on ‘Storm Warning’ in the titles to find it. Hey- at least there’s no password required!)
Definitely an interesting entry in the Storm Warning series. We start out with lots of alien sex and move on to Lionel showing up. I LOVE Lionel! I rather like the way the author lays out the thoughts of Lex and Lionel during their exchanges, and I like her characterization of Lionel- he loves his son, but he’ll never let on. He’ll also do pretty much anything to get his way. Oh yea- Clark discovers a new power in this fic.
We move FAR into AU/future fic territory with this installment of the ‘Storm Warning’ series- 2008 to be exact. This is probably my favorite story in the series. We do a bit of timeline switching, and it makes for a very interesting read. To sum it up- in 2008, Lex returns to Metropolis from Europe. This is a powerful and fairly evil Lex- and Clark’s the cause. Seems Clark betrayed him and drove him away, and Lex did not react well. Now, Clark’s a reporter working with Lois Lane (who I usually detest, but actually really like in this story) and keeping an eye on Lex. Is EvilLex as evil as he appears? You’ll have to read it to find out. While I didn’t really buy the explanation for the break-up and Lex’s subsequent turn to evil, the rest of the story I really liked!
The final story in the ‘Storm Warning’ series, and it’s definitely a bit different. It kicks off in first person (which I tend not to like), but switches back to third further in. In the beginning, Lex is governor and Clark is publicly known as his partner. It traces their life together through the presidential election and keeps going until Lex is in his 70’s. Lois Lane, Jonathan, and Martha all play parts. I don’t want to spoil things, but just so you know- Clark starts the story feeling ill and hiding it from Lex. I guessed almost immediately what was going on- you probably will too. Let’s just say it’s not my favorite storyline- but the story as a whole was still cool. It was neat to see all of the loose ends tied up and follow things through to the end.
