Amnesia! Spike - Full Article

He didn’t know who he was, and to hear the lot of them talk, he didn’t know what he was, either.  In fact, he only knew one thing about himself.  Luckily it was a very important thing.

He had a really cool coat.

HEE!  This Spike focused story breaks from canon during season 6.  The premise?  Spike gets bopped on the head and loses his memory.  Buffy reluctantly agrees to let him stay at her house, seeing as it was Dawn’s fault he got ‘bopped’.  Once he accepts the idea that he’s a vampire with no memory, Spike, being Spike, gets bored.  On the plus side of things, he finds a note that suggests he has a secret lover.  For the rest of the story, he tries to figure out who it is.  Given the fact that Spike can imagine having sex with just about everyone he meets, the puzzle is not an easy one to piece together.

This fic continually cracked me up.  Mahaliem has a flare for dialogue and this fanfic sounds like the show.  The premise is also a nifty one, and the author really milks it for every bit of humor- and does so with style.  Andrew is even watching from the shadows, fascinated by ‘Master Vampire Spike’ and his irresistible appeal to all around him.  The characterizations of a rather large cast of characters were also appealing- I liked everybody in the fic.  Lastly, there’s a lot of heart beneath the humor- and while it’s funny when Spike wonders if Xander could be ‘the one’, it’s also all a bit bittersweet.  Very nice read, highly recommended.

Hee!  This is very short and very clever- it’s a parody of ‘The Raven’, set during season 4, when Giles still had Spike chained up in his bathroom.  I like Spike.  I like Giles.  I like Poe.  If you like any one of the three, you’ll dig this!

This AU series is set in 2007, but breaks from canon post-Gift.  It’s premised on the idea that Buffy didn’t come back.  In this altered world, Giles has moved back to England where he lives a somewhat hollow life.  Spike has moved on as well, floating from place to place, chip still allowing him to be only half a vamp, making a ‘living’ selling mystic artifacts when he comes across them.  Thus Giles and Spike have an uneasy truce, the extent of which is tested when Spike delivers a particularly significant artifact to Giles- and asks only a favor in return.  Giles, dude?  You really should have known better!

This is a long story, with plenty of action and adventure, though it lacks much of the humor found in some of my favorite Buffy fanfics.  However, that seemed appropriate in a ‘post-Buffy’ world, and there’s snark aplenty to go along with two very nice characterizations of my favorite Buffy boys.  I enjoyed seeing Giles once again throw himself into the fray, and Spike’s struggles with who and what he is- and wants to be- really appealed.  Some may find the ending a bit sad, but for me, I thought it was a perfect fit for the tale.  Highly rec’ed for those who love either of the guys and are in the mood for action.

I love clever fics- stories that are just smart, that keep me guessing.  This would be an excellent example of a clever cross-over fanfic!  It’s a long tale, set during the final months of the first war against Voldemort, and it manages to stay ‘in canon’ for both Buffy and Harry Potter, while bringing a young Giles and Ethan into the wizarding realm.  When the two human magic dabblers spot a burning skull floating across the London sky, their investigations lead them smack dab into a type of wizardry they had never known existed.  Dumbledore, the 4 Marauders, and a young Severus Snape see the potential use for ‘muggle magic’ in the war, while Giles is eager to investigate this new form of sorcery.  Ethan?  As always, expect him to be looking out for number 1!

This is a rousing story, full of interesting magic, suspense, and action.  What I loved best about it, however, was the very clever way the two existing canons were woven together.  This is the story of how the Marauders fell apart, the role of Snape in Voldemort’s first demise, and the setting of the stage for ‘the boy who lived’.  The writing is excellent, pro level stuff, and the characterizations really appealed.  While I’m not a big fan of MMWP, I liked them in this story and I loved both Snape and Giles.  I’ve decided the world needs more stories where Snape and Ethan interact- those bits just gave me a big happy!  While perhaps not as focused on my favs as I generally prefer, the tale itself completely held my interest, and there was plenty of good Snape- playing one of my favorite roles.  Highly recommended reading!

This is something very different and very good.  It is the story of Giles’ life- from the perspective of a tree.  Of course, this is not just any tree- it’s an English tree, filled with a magic so deep most humans will never know it’s magic at all.  Rupert certainly didn’t know, not when he was a boy and carved his name in her skin, and not when he was a young man searching for peace and place and purpose.  Ethan, well Ethan always was a crafty bastard, and he recognized the magic when he saw it- or maybe he recognized the magic because he shared the same need as the tree.  No matter- Giles grew up and Giles went away.  The tree, she stayed and she waited and eventually, she learned:  Something new about love, or something old rather, that she hadn’t had words for before, though she’d been living it all along. Something she’d never had time to teach before she sent her own seed far away: if love does not come back, you go to it.

This?  Is simply wonderful.  Any lover of Giles, or words, or fanfic will see the appeal.  It’s slow and it’s distant and it unravels the years slowly as they pass, all the while giving us a very interesting perspective on Giles and his life.  Really, really unique.
