Shattered/Asylum laid out one of my favorite Smallville arcs, and this fic does a brilliant job of presenting us an AU future fic that branched off from Asylum.  In this version of history, Lex loses all of his memories of Smallville after the electric shock therapy and he returns to Metropolis under his father’s tutorage.  The beginning of the tale weaves two timeframes together- the history surrounding Julian’s death (with heavy doses of a young Bruce Wayne) and the future where Lex runs into a mysterious vigilante named Kal who just may help him get his memories back.  This is a long, plotty tale with lots of action, strong characterizations and a tight writing style that works well.  Highly recommended!

So, you know all of those s1-s2 stories where Clark goes to Lex, confesses all his secrets and then they have hot, smutty sex?  Well, this is one of my favorites.  Set just after s1’s ‘Stray’, Clark tries to convince Lex to stay in Smallville- and to find out if what he thinks Lex wants is really what Lex wants.  This story stands out for me due to the characterizations and sharp writing.  Clark is particularly fun in this story, and his inner dialog and uncertainty ring really true (at least for s1 Clark).  The story has a wry sense of humor and doesn’t take itself too seriously.  It’s fun and schmoopy and smutty.  “Maybe Clark was a big idiot. A big, naked idiot. And a freak.  A super freak.” And maybe this story is super fun!

It’s Christmas time in Smallville, at least in this long, sprawling, very funny, very sweet future fic.  Rift?  What Rift?  I absolutely adore this story.  Lionel has invited his whole clan home for the holidays, and that includes established relationship Clex.  Jon and Martha show up, along with Lucas and his bride, a number of very fun OCs, and a staff who end up getting rather tipsy while having to deal with family feuds, floating aliens, and federal agents.  It’s fun, it’s very well written, the dialog crackles, there’s plenty of plot and it’s just really sweet.  I think my favorite part is the relationship between Lionel and Lex- which is prickly and awkward, but founded on love and respect.  This is a feel good story that will make you forget all about electro shock therapy, secrets and lies.

Set during the first season, the story picks up on Lex’s birthday.  Birthdays have not been the cause for much celebration for Lex and this one starts out no differently.  Seems Lionel has given Lex his present- in the form of a failing sports team.  Lex isn’t impressed, but Clark is.  I adore the first half of this story because it gives great Clark/Lex friendship.  The writing is sharp and the dialog dead on.  It’s sweet and it’s funny and it’s a little sad- and I really wish the show had given us more of this.  The second half is pretty traditional season 1 slash fare and it’s good.  But me- I love this one for the friendship vibe, the dialog and the Lex characterization.

I’m not up on comics canon and you don’t need to be to enjoy this series.  This is a collection of fanfic, some drabbles, some quite long, chronicling the life of Mercy Graves.  In the comics, Hope and Mercy are Lex’s beautiful bodyguards/henchwomen/minions.  The fanfic explores how Mercy came to work for Lex, her relationship with Hope, and her relationship with Clark/Superman/Kal.  The stories range in time almost 100 years and include everything from post-rift Superman vs. Luthor; Lex and his daughter; reconciled Clark/Lex and beyond.  Dolimir has a nice, clear writing style that carries you effortlessly along this fascinating journey through the lives of three people with a destiny.  I love it for the variety and the brilliant characterization of Lex.  Once you start reading, you will be addicted.

This is a lovely big chunk of future fic, and I love it for both the story told and the WAY it’s told.  The story begins with a newspaper article reporting the death of Presidential Candidate Lex Luthor.  We then cut to Lex, bleeding out on the ground as Superman appears.  The story continues to cut between the newspaper article and back and forth in time as the events surrounding the incident are laid out.  And while it may seem I’ve spoiled the story, I haven’t.  To say much more, however, would.  Take my word for it, this is a tautly crafted tale with a great deal of emotional impact.  Complex story telling, characterizations that really resonated for me and a fascinating read.  What more do you want?

Ok, this is just a really weird AU.  Lex is a vampire.  So were his folks.  This fact results in a marked improvement in Lex/Lionel relations and turns Lex’s metaphoric hunger for Clark into a more literal one.  It’s a fast read with a sparse writing style that works well for pumping out what is really quite a lot of story.  Also, it’s just fun.  “Um, Lex? Schmoop.  Pure, sugary, schmoop.  Which honestly, is not my normal thing.  However, this AU take on Lex and Clark’s first meeting just made me grin.  It’s a fairly lengthy tale that begins when 16ish year old Clark Kent dials a wrong number and strikes up a conversation with an unlikely friend.  Much of the story is told through phone convos, and the story follows Clark all the way to college.  I grant you there’s more than a hint of melodrama to the ending, but if you need something fun and sweet, this is a safe bet.

[Added: 03/16/04 | Lex Clark Jonathan Martha]

This is a ‘feel good’ story that has Lex mysteriously transforming into a young (7-9) boy and ending up at the Kent farm. The Kents, of course, take him in and tell him his parents have sent him there to gain some new experience.  I get off on these ‘innocent Lex’ stories, where we get a glimpse of his potential before life left him so jaded. In this tale, he really bonds to Jon (and the rest of the Kents). The characterizations of everybody gave me a big ‘happy’, and the images of young Alexander trotting along behind Jon or Clark made me smile. I also loved the little details- particularly young ‘Lex’ insisting they call him Alexander, as his mother called him that and only his father called him ‘Lex’. Which brings up a factor that really made this fic shine for me- and that’s the underlying sadness to the story. Seeing young Lex with a ‘normal’, loving family just emphasizes what he didn’t have growing up (as his insistence that only his father calls him ‘Lex’ emphasizes another battle he ended up losing). Also, some nice stuff with Lionel showing up and not recognizing young Lex (though in a way, he can’t really be blamed).  Anyway, a nice, feel good story. It could use maybe one more beta for a few POV issues and the occasional awkward phrase, but definitely worth the time.

A ‘Lex gets de-aged’ story, but in this fic it’s only Lex’s mind and not his body that reverts to 5 year old status. The reversion is explained, and it’s a plot point, so I won’t spoil it. Anyway, so Lex was sitting around taking care of business, and the next thing, he shows up at the Talon acting like he’s 5. Fortunately, Clark is there to whisk him away to the farm and try to figure out what’s going on.  This isn’t a long story, but it does have a solid plot driving it. Lex has a big business deal that must be pushed through. However, a 5 year old mind just isn’t geared toward corporate buy-outs. Neither are farm boys, so the guys seem to have a problem on their hands!  Several things made this a good read for me- there’s the ‘innocent Lex’ factor (eating cookies), and in an adult body, that makes for some nice humor (holding hands and making Clark carry him). The writing is also a cut above, and carries you along effortlessly. What I most enjoyed, however, was a plot point involving what Lex has done to protect himself from, well, himself. It was a very nice touch and this story is a nice way to burn half-an-hour or so.

I love this fic, and its prequel ‘Promise’ (read that one first).  This is a long future fic that starts out with Clark at Met U., and still very much ‘best friends’ with rising business mogul Lex Luthor.  There’s a lot to the story, which includes a nice mystery concerning the possible discovery of Clark’s secret (Lex is already in the know) and a sub-plot involving a nifty AI named EVNN who Clark feels a kinship with.  While the story itself is good, what I love about the fic are the characterizations and the relationship between the two guys.  This is my absolute favorite type of Luthor- as Jonathan puts it, he’s a ruthless, quicktempered, and surprisingly loyal man.  Damn straight.  That this version of Lex would be willing to kill to protect Clark is undeniable.  In fact, without Clark, I could easily see this Lex as amoral, not pursuing evil per se, but more than willing to accept that the ends justify the means.  However, Clark is his moderating influence, and Clark and pretty much everyone else knows it.  Ghuh!  I love that stuff.  I also love how Lex remains a cynic, always convinced that true happiness is something he will never have and never really deserve.

Clark too is well drawn, honest and very young, still plagued by guilt that he can’t save everyone, but rapidly becoming the man who will be Superman.  Yet he relies on Lex every bit as much as Lex relies on him.  That’s what I want to see in my Clex fic- the idea that they are bound together, the most important things in each others universes.  (And a final note- I love how Clark and Lex automatically cuddle.  I find that sexier and more telling than sex.  ‘A Figure in Hiding’ does something similiar, and I love it there, too.  I like the idea that Lex has ‘touch’ issues and that Clark is the only one he allows to be close to him, both emotionally and physically.) Anyway, enough babbling.  Go read!

This mid-sized story is book 7 in the ‘Identical series’, and the focus here is on Lex and the Kent family.  Martha and Jonathan come to terms with the fact that Clark and Lex are involved, and deal with Karloff’s knowledge of Clark’s secrets.  It’s the usual blend of action, humor and angst that we’ve come to expect from Lanning.  I particularly loved Martha in this fic, and her ‘sex talk’ with Clark had me cracking up.  She is one formidable lady, whether it’s dealing with Clark’s sexuality or with Karloff and his attempts at manipulation.  The Jonathan/Lex interactions were also enjoyable- those two really do have a lot in common.  This was a nice entry in the series, and I suspect an important turning point, as the Kents fully join the war against the clone.

Book 8 in the ‘Identical’ series is a nice, long plotty story that does a nice job of bringing bits of Smallville canon into the ‘Identical’ universe.  Eli shows up at the farm with some important information for Lex.  It seems a woman from his past is back in the picture, and Lex needs to get to her before anyone else can.  However, things are more complex than they first appear.  Lucas enters the picture in a decidedly different way than he did in the series, and if you think Karloff is going to be happy about the presence of another heir, well then you don’t know the clone very well.  Expect lots of action as Lex attempt to save Pamela, Lucas and even his father.  Not everyone is going to make it out of this story alive.

Another good entry in the series, though what I enjoyed most were the Lex/Lionel interactions.  It kills me that Lex still has an intense need to believe that his father loves him.  What’s odd (and part of why I love this series), is that I believe in his own twisted way, Lionel does love Lex.  Good stuff, all around.

Oh, this is simply a beautiful and subversively creepy AU that splits off from canon at ‘Asylum’.  The writing is lyrical and gives us a deeply personal look into Lex’s shattered mind.  In the beginning, Lex has only fragments of memories and no idea how he came to be in this ice fortress in the middle of nowhere.  Fortunately, ‘Kal’ is there to protect him, and if Lex knows nothing else, he knows that he loves Kal.  But the safety that is gained is not without a cost.  He also remembers that Kal, no matter what name he uses, always tries to protect Lex from the truth. Shivers!!  This is a wonderful Lex characterization and a masterful presentation of the story being told.  I love how bits and pieces are revealed to us, just as they are revealed to Lex.  And if I can’t quite see canon Clark going down this path, it’s an AU version that I quite enjoyed.  Reminded me just a bit of ‘Past Grief’ in that regard.

I have a fondness for ‘5 Things’ fics- probably because the format encourages ‘plottiness’.  I’m a sucker for a nifty idea!  Fortunately, RivkaT is one of my favorite Smallville writers, and really does justice to the format with this fic.  I definitely enjoyed the first ‘thing’, in which Lex ‘catches’ Cassandra’s power.  Can Clark help him to overcome the visions?  Well, he can certainly try: Clark kissed like an insurrection, razing everything in its path. The third ‘thing’ was also a favorite- one I wouldn’t minded seeing more of.  It’s very AU, based on the idea that after the meteor shower, Lex was in a coma for 12 years- but didn’t age.  When he wakes up, Lionel takes him to the castle in Smallville- and a new ‘nanny’- Martha Kent.  Really cool story!  The last of the ‘things’ was just plain devious- creepy chill down your spine kind of good.  There’s also a sad one and another AU that didn’t knock me dead- but I’d say that if you like Lex, you’re bound to get a kick out of at least one of these.  Good writer- lots of interesting ideas.

This is an odd story, chronicling Clark’s descent into hell in an effort to save a version of Lex who may not want saving.  Though it is a future fic, set post-rift and after Clark has donned the Superman mantel, it reads much more like a dream than reality.  Thamiris’ writing is always very lush, very descriptive, and never more so than here, in the portrayal of a surreal and fluid world.  It’s not a long story or even terribly ‘plotty’, but it’s interesting enough and the conceptualization of hell, Lex and Lionel fascinated me.  Very different.

Zeke even shows up, guarding Satan’s back. I loved Zeke! You’ll also find find Clark and Lionel/Satan fighting for Lex’s soul. In this war, sex is very much a weapon.  Note- I do have a few quibbles with this story, particularly Lex calling Lionel ‘daddy’.  Cringe. It says a lot that I’m recommending it anyway.

This is my favorite of these stories. It roughly follows the happenings in ACIP and Wilderness- by I believe 3 months. Lex is very conflicted in this story, and decides it’s time to act. This is a version of Lex I really like- he’s smart, proactive, and a little psychotic. OK- he’s a lot psychotic, but I like that. I think I prefer this story because I don’t quite see Lex ‘broken’ like I do in the others. Or maybe he is broken, but kinda sorta ‘fixed’- in that way that leaves you bent and different, yet stronger than before. I also like the way Clark reacts to Lex’s betrayal. It rang true for me. Like I say- this one is a bit different than the other three, and it’s more in tune with the type of story I like.

Very interesting, very dark, very well written (slightly) future fic. I’m recommending it for two reasons. First, it really is well written and tightly constructed. Second, it’s earned quite a bit of discussion on both TWoP and on various blogs. Some folks adore it and pretty much everyone agrees it’s an interesting and well written fic. It’s a fairly standard premise- Lex discovers Clark’s secret and does not react well. (Yes, Lionel is partly at fault.) I mean, Lex REALLY doesn’t react well. Which is, of course, where some of the controversy lies. Still, it’s a great read, it brings up some interesting questions concerning Clark’s origins and purpose, and you really can’t debate the merits of the story until, well, you’ve read it!  LJ discussion Pt.1, Pt.2.

is a nice example. I particularly like how that author explores the process of Lex trying to change his view of Clark from a ‘him’ to an ‘it’. FayJay also brings up the idea that Lex sees the alien as a potential threat to humanity, possibly the beginnings of invasion. Whether this is simply a rationalization on Lex’s part, or a result of his naturally cynical nature (or hell- it’s really not that outlandish a thought upon learning aliens ‘walk among us’) is unclear- and no doubt meant to be.

After a particularly rough night, he ends up on the doorstep of none other than Rupert Giles, my favorite Watcher. There’s no slash here, though if there are ever any sequels, I can imagine things going that way. Of course, I have a dirty mind. This is a short tale, but the writing is excellent and the characters are even better. Great jaded version of Giles, angsty but already able to (mostly) hide it Lex. Yummy stuff. Lex’s morning in Vegas starts off kinda crappy, what with the dead girl he finds in his room.  I hate it when that happens!  Fortunately, the CSI team is on the case.  Unfortunately, Lex is the prime suspect.  Clark and Helen both rush to Lex’s side- causing quite a bit of smirking on the part of the CSI agents.  Did Lex do it?  Is it some evil plot by Lionel?  Will Lex have Mercy and Hope kill everybody and then make a run for the border?  Read to find out.

As much as the plot makes this sound like a murder mystery, that’s not really the strongest element in this mid-sized read.  What I adored about it was the Clark/Lex relationship.  I absolutely love stories in which Clark is Lex’s moderating influence- the one who keeps him human.  What can I say, I have a thing for irony.  But yea- it’s the little things in this fic- the way that everyone who knows Lex knows to call in Clark when the ‘boss’ is feeling irritable.  Just a cute, schmoopy tale, all wrapped up in a mystery.  To quote CSI’s Nick “Man, was that sappy or what?”

Awww.  This short story is so sweet it makes my teeth hurt.  It’s so sweet, it actually comes with its own recipe for cream puffs.  I kid you not!  But when I need to be cheered up, when the rift looms too close- well, cream puffs are damn tasty!  This is a post-rift future fic, told mostly from Martha’s pov.  With Clark spending all of his time as Superman and Jonathan having passed, it’s just Martha and her daughter Hannah living at the old farm house.  When a 30ish year old Lex shows up at the door, looking to buy cream puffs, Martha almost doesn’t let him in.  But she does- and both Lex and the readers are grateful.  I’ve always liked the idea that part of Clark’s attraction for Lex is the Kent family itself.  Given that Lex has Lionel as a father, you really can’t blame the guy for trying to make a new family.  That’s what I love about this fic- Lex letting his guard down, wanting so badly to be accepted into a family.  Of course, Clark isn’t going to be too thrilled when he finds out that a ‘super-villain’ has been hanging with his mom and little sister.  But if you want to know what happens, you’ll have to read to find out.

Fun, action oriented story set during Clark’s senior year of high school.  It begins with Lex getting kidnapped- which I always enjoy.  This time, Clark isn’t around to save him.  Instead, he’s off checking out colleges with Pete, snogging college women, and wondering why he keeps thinking of Lex while he does so.  When Lex isn’t trying to work feeling back into his limbs, he’s thinking about Clark.  Rift?  What rift?

This one was a lot of fun for me- I enjoyed the plot and the action, and particularly appreciated the characterization of Lex.  This Lex is smart, controlled and competent- even when he’s at a disadvantage.  Clark also comes across well, and I thought the author did a nice job giving us little details that reveal how important these two men are to each other.  Good solid storytelling, plenty of action and characterizations I enjoyed.  Definitely worth your time.  (Note- I kept getting jarred by the POV shifts- a little delimiter between sections would have been nice.  It wasn’t a flaw in the writing, more in the presentation- and a couple of times I found myself doing a double take.(

Read this again on referral from TWOP. It’s future fic, no rift, told in 2nd person (which I usually hate, but quite enjoy in this story). It’s a Clark/Superman POV, and aptly titled. It’s all about Lex behaving recklessly, and even Clark starts to suspect he’s doing it to get Superman’s attention. Which he does. Which results in sex. Which makes Clark insanely jealous. Hee! Those are my favorite parts- Clark being jealous of Superman. Like this line:  ‘Of course, there’s something wrong’, you want to say. ‘Superman is fucking my best friend.’

I enjoy stories that play up the dichotomy between Clark and Superman, and I enjoy the portrayal of Lex we get (as seen through Clark’s eyes and the reader’s ability to interpret things in a way Clark does not). As mentioned, the 2nd person Clark pov works really well for me in this story. It moves very quickly. There aren’t many surprises storyline-wise, but I enjoyed the style and the characterizations. It was a clever way to tell the tale. I’m not sure why I haven’t rec’ed it before. Maybe because it’s not a very substantial story, but it’s different and an enjoyable read.
